We Fought The Big One With DJ Jaguar - Friday, Oct. 5th

Hey all. I see that Rick hasn't gotten in here yet so I'm going to post this. Would love for some of you to come out to this, especially since I'm the guest DJ.

If I don't know you, please come up and introduce yourself. Always up for meeting other board members.

IT'S TONIGHT!!!

Howdy!

We gots a mighty tasty "We Fought the Big One" planned for this Friday evening! First off, Brandon and I will be spinning records with our good friend and long-time supporter DJ Jaguar, whose love of feedback-drenched guitar, sheets of white noise and strange ethereal sounds knows no boundaries. We've always tipped our collective hat to the shoegaze scene at the Big One, but this Friday evening we are going whole hog into the belly of the beast!

OK, so B and I know Jaguar. But do you? She has a very choice radio show by the name of The Trans-Atlantic Underground, and it's been broadcast on 3 different stations (one in NYC, another in Detroit and also one in Lima, Peru!) and she has listeners around the globe! So in other words, this is a gal that knows her stuff and has a loving fan base to prove it. This Friday is your chance to hear her do what she does best. Also, when was the last time we had a member of the fairer sex guest dj at the Big One? Very special indeed me thinks!

Also, it's Brandon's birthday on Thursday, which means we need to give the man a proper roasting & toasting on Friday night. If everybody buys him just one drink, that'll ensure the man goes home with a silly grin on his mugger!

Ok then, hope to see you Friday!
Rick

Thanks for posting about this Jag!

Yup, I think any 9:30 Board member who has gotten a kick out of reading Jag's posts through the years will really enjoy hearing her spin tonight at Marx. If you haven't met Jag, you need to. She is an awesome lady and right now, I'm scratching my head trying to think of someone who is more familiar with the whole noise pop/shoegazer/dream pop/wall-of-sound scene. Asobi Seksu, MBV, Slowdive, Airiel, A Place to Bury Strangers—she's got ya covered. And those bands are just the tip of the iceberg.

Also, just wanted to mention that I think fans of the original post-punk scene from 1977 - 1983 will also really love "We Fought the Big One." My dj partner and friend Brandon have always had a huge passion for the old-school D.I.Y. sound. But again, bands like Gang of Four, Joy Divison and Wire are just scratching the surface. So much great music was made during that era (and it still sounds amazing!). The original idea behind the Big One was to have a night where this scene could be celebrated and explored, right alongside the aforementioned shoegaze sound and some of the more experimental, less blatently commericial alt sound.

Oh yes, and did I also fail to mention that the Marx has a kick ass selection of Belgian beer?

Also, we have some fresh mix cds. Come stop by the dj booth and ask for one. Or two. ;)

Hope to see some of you tonight!
Rick

Quite excited about tonight!

Still toying around with different ideas but I can promise that there will be at least a cut or two from my 'Private Stock' along with a whole mix of other delights from the Treehouse of Jaguar; aka The Trans-Atlantic Underground.

One little teaser: One of my "Private Stock" cuts that will be featured tonight is from a direct decendant of Spiritualized; not to mention, one of my absolute favorite musicians. They found me and sent me the goods and I'd love to dangle this gem upon your ears.
So, how did it go?
