Depends on your definition of "indie".
There are some UK bands that do great over there, but are treated as "indie" bands in the states as far as label support, radio play and general recognition.
Teenage Fanclub was one of those bands that I always thought would take off here in the states, but never really caught on. Same applies to Stereophonics.

In the US, the La's. Certainly not a soft one-hit wonder as many here may consider them to be. A great album - that's never seems to be mentioned - and at least one other classic song in Timeless Melody. And even the "one hit" is probably underrated - relegated to chick flick soundtrack material by many rather than appreciated as the perfect proto-Britpop song it is.

I've got a copy of The El Dorado LP that I got new a couple years ago that only cost me maybe $10 or even less. About a year or so later, I saw it going for over $1,300!!! Now, they don't even have it listed.
I'm not even going to start listing bands because there are way, way, way too many.

Anna Waronker came out with a solo album a couple years ago that is really good. Kind of that dog mach 2.
And, Petra Haden is of course touring with the Decemberists.
Tanya Haden (not in the band, but a triplet to the other sisters who formed the band) married Jack Black and bore him a child.
Have you ever heard the Petra Hayden Sells Out album? I was pretty skeptical, but I listened to an MP3 that Pitchfork posted of her doing the vocal treatment to God Only Knows, and it was pretty great.

I find myself playing Clinic's first two albums all the time. Those albums are so good, and I can see that band kind of just fading away like Six By Seven did, which was another great band.

Would have to agree about the definition of indie.
The Frames, for example, is a good choice, but they are huge in Ireland, Czech Repub, and across Europe.
Up to a few years ago, my vote would have been for Calexico, but now…i think mercury program or world inferno/friendship need more help.
