I got a ticket for running a red light when I was 21. Nothing since.

What the F did you do?
I was driving back to The OC from Humbolt at a ridiculously early time in the morning. It was about 5:15 AM in Sonoma County and I was going at or over 100 MPH in a 55 MPH zone on 101 (the federal mandated limit at the time). That's considered Reckless Driving in CA (as well it should be, too) and carried a huge fine. The cop actually wrote it up as 95+ so he wouldn't have to take me to jail right then, but it was still over the limit for reckless driving.

What pissed me off was that I had no intention of fighting it, I just didn't want to have to drive that far for my court appearance, but it was mandatory and I couldn't get it transferred to a more local court. So that's when I started thinking, hell, if I have to go that far, I might as well put up a fight. Bad idea, and I was only saved by the guy with similar sentiment who went before me.

This was also ten years ago when I was young and stupid, so I can't imagine what the fine is now.

All told, with the fine, extra trip to NorCal and increase in my insurance rates, the ticket cost me about $3000. It was my last ticket until the MD ticket, which was around 80 in a 55 zone coming out of a 65 zone on 95 returning from NY 2 years back.

Always a silver lining though, because I was in and out of court that morning, I drove the Jeep that I bought after selling my BMW (the car I got the ticket in) back down PCH all the way from Sonoma to Newport Beach with the top off from sunrise to sunset. To this day, the best drive of my life.

i thought there were no speeding fines in montana … or is that only during the day …
I am pretty sure i was in Montana and in a 35mph limit. Perhaps there are some roads with no speed restrictions, but certainly not all of them are that way.
it may just be highways … but i remember reading something about it because the feds were mad at them over the no-speed-limit and they threatened to withhold federal highway funds, similar to DC's defiance of the national 21-to-drink law in the 80s … speaking of which, don't you think it would have been an easy choice to go to a DC school in the early 80s when you could drink here and nowhere else in the country (save LA)?

Hey folks..I am a police officer in MD and I can tell you that switching your date will not help you. We actually get in trouble for missing court dates, so unless we are out of town we MUST be there. I have never missed a date nor has anyone in my dept. Also you gotta remember one thing, if there is a prosecutor present he/she can always ask for a continiuance until ALL witnesses are present. Your best bet would be plead not guilty and ask for no points. In MD if you have been clean 5 yrs. and you agree to plead guilty, they will waive the points. BUT, if you are stopped again those points get put on. Its a probation thing. The other option is slow down a bit. I normally allow for 10 over the limit on highways, residential I am more strict do to kids and such.

Good Luck!!!
oh my god . . . j mascis is a cop. all this time. the jesus of guitar is really out there busting people for not yeilding the right of way. no wonder j. never spoke that much, and always acted like something was going on wrong.
we still love you though, and thanks for the shows with dave schools.

i believe montana has a safe and prudent policy for the interstate, during the day. also, the $5 fine, i think, is for wasting gasoline (a car burns more gasoline at higher speeds, blah blah blah), not for speeding. their fine for speeding used to be $20, pay on the spot.

TROOPER
You're required to display
temporary tags, either in the
plate area or taped inside the
back window.

CARL
Certainly -

TROOPER
Can I see your license and
registration please?

CARL
Certainly.

He reaches for his wallet.

CARL
… I was gonna tape up the
temporary tag, ya know, to be
in full compliance, but it, uh,
it, uh … must a slipped my
mind…

He extends his wallet toward the trooper, a folded fifty-
dollar bill protruding from it.

CARL
… So maybe the best thing
would be to take care of that,
right here in Brainerd.

TROOPER
What's this, sir?

CARL
That's my license and regis-
tration. I wanna be in
compliance.

He forces a laugh.

CARL
… I was just thinking I could
take care of it right here. In
Brainerd.

The policeman thoughtfully pats the fifty into the billfold and hands the billfold back into the car.
All right meow. Hand over your license and registration.

[the man hands him his license]
Your registration? Hurry up meow.

All right, meow. where were we?

DC may have been a bit of a hold-out, but they weren't alone. You could drink in Virginia at 19 until the mid 80's. NY didn't change their laws until around that time too.
