He was not gay. At one point he said that his life would be much easier if he were gay, because then he could get sex at truckstop rest stops, but alas, he wasn't.
Way too many damned commercials. Glad I had a vcr and could forward through the commercials.

He was a Californian who went to Alaska only during the summer. Everyone in California is gay, anyway. Except for Timothy Treadwell. He was straight.

Begging your pardon sir, but the above statement doesn't sound like anything a butch Alaskan would utter in the bush.

Is this different than the movie they did about him? From what I understand that did have at least some of the audio tape of the attack.

This is the documentary that got so many raves this past year, and is the 2005 version of "how on earth did that documentary not get nominated for an Oscar" debate. I haven't seen it yet, but did Tivo it. Saw a few minutes when Herzog listens to the audio of Grizzly Man and his girlfriend being mauled, and he tells Grizzly Man's mom (?) to never, ever listen, and in fact destroy the tape.
For some of the mostly glowing reviews, links are
here.

i tivo'ed the disc channel pres of the movie…how many gd commercials did they squeeze into that movie? ridiculous. i'm into the last hour, but i'm a bit disappointed by it so far. werner herzog's footage of the ex-girlfriend and coroner seem a bit staged/contrived…
i don't think tim threadwell is gay, just creepy and eccentric. i appreciate his desire to bond with the bears and educate people on the threat to the grizzly's habitat, but his approach was insane and perhaps may have done more harm than good. i believe it was the native alaskan guy talking about the respect and distance of his people from the bears and the necessity to maintain this divide. threadwell, by befriending the bears, was only creating a conduit for other human contact with the animals.
one of the most personal, yet bizarre, pieces of footage was his monologue during which he said "i will die for these animals" over and over. did anyone else see this as his acknowledgement (or desire?) that he would someday die by the hand of a grizzly bear?

Ditto. I knew several hippy guys like that in college, none of whom were gay (and, in fact, some were quite the womanizers with their feminine sides all exposed and receptive to intimacy….). It's all part of a particular alternative/"in touch with nature" affect.

Do we know if they cut any of it out? I've got it on Tivo, so can skip the ads. Also, does the DVD have any extras particularly worth checking out?

I was wondering if the bleeping of the profanities was a feature of the big screen version, or was it censored for television only. One "fuck" did slip through.

I saw the DVD about a month ago and then checked it out Sat. night for a bit before the commercials made me turn it off. I'm not sure how much they edited out of the Discovery airing, but I do think that they added the Letterman appearance which I don't think was in the DVD version.

I always thought this guy was a dumbass, so I skipped this movie. But a friend of mine says that it is extremely well done.

Plus he's a pale skinny blonde guy with little body hair. Hardly a "grizzly man", or a bearman for that matter.

So did he have any background that would make him an expert on Grizzlies?

his background on bears was pretty much limited to having a stuffed animal bear that he loved growing up….
he was a nut, who it was pointed out in a book I read before I saw the movie (the grizzly maze, it was called) that by dying, he cause at least 2-3 bears to be killed, so his wish to keep them from harm failed cause of his utter stupidity…
neverthless, I thought the movie was fascinating and utterly compelling….
