Madonna's new record deal

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7047969.stm Personally, I think it's criminal if an artist embraces anything to do with that whole Live Nation/Clear Channel b.s. That's like shaking hands with the devil. But ultimately it's up to the fans to determine whather or not they want to spend outrageous money on concert tickets and merchandise. Guess it was too enticing for Madonna not to accept $120 million. But it's not like she hasn't already made a buttload of money already.

It confuses and bewilders and disgusts me when smaller artists/bands want to have anything to do with them. They're ruining live music; you'd think people would've learned their lesson not to work with them after they single-handedly destroyed radio beyond repare.

Coolfer According to a Live Nation SEC filing, Madonna was given $25 million in stock (1,174,371 shares) for her recently inked contract. As of Live Nation's last quarterly earnings date, the company had 65.5 million shares outstanding. Let's do the math: Madonna now owns about 1.8% of the company's stock. The company's Proxy Statement lists the company's security ownership. Madonna, according to this list, would be the fifth largest shareholder of Live Nation and the second largest individual shareholder (behind only L. Lowry Mays, the chairman of the board and founder of Clear Channel Communications, who owns 14.9% of the shares).

False.
L. Lowry Mays owns 5.4% of the stock. I doubt he's bought almost 10% of the shares since February. Fidelity Investments owns 14.9% of the stock. That data comes from the very link that they cite in the Coolfer story. Pretty lazy journalism.

Freight train/tunnel…no light. This has been coming for the past two years.
One analogy for Madonna's decision: Senior citizens usually move into retirement communities because they no longer what to take care of the details of life themselves. This must be Madonna's senior moment…she must also feel that many more artists will make the same decision since she probably thinks she's a trend-setting icon. Any bets on who's next?
Lemonade out of lemons: This may finally get the visibility needed to kick-off a Dept. of Justice investigation into monopolistic predation in the music business: Only this time, there's no payola since they also own the radio stations. Sigh.

I just assumed "individual" meant a single person, rather than an investment group. That's probably why he lists her as 5th overall and 2nd highest individual.

Yeah, that's true. But the difference between an individual owning 5.4% and 14.9% is pretty huge.

Ummm…What's false: My opinion or Clear Channel's control of some major market radio stations?

Live Nation and Clear Channel are separate companies, both of which are publicly traded.

That doesn't matter. In the eyes of busniess entity, they are considered two separate entities. I bet if you looked at all of the auto industry, you'd find similar boards with the same contracts with similar companies, but no one would argue that Ford and GM are the smae company. Now if they shared the same CEO….

I have - I've researched both companies and their finances rather extensively for stock purposes. Harvey Weinstein is on the Board of Directors as well - does that mean Miramax is on this big corporate conspiracy to ruin music? How about Henry Cisneros? He was the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under Clinton…I bet this is all because Hillary is a huge Madonna fan.
They're still on public companies that answer to shareholders. Given that Live Nation is a spinoff of Clear Channel, of course they are going to have a relationship and some of the same people will still be involved. But based on everything that I have read and what I know, there is no special arrangement between Clear Channel and Live Nation that would suggest some kind of collusion giving one company any kind of sway over the other.
