Why 1750? What was your methodology? It looks pretty comprehensive; it may be of interest to music and mainstream media if it's reasonably objective.
Top songs of the 1970s....

sonick - what were your standards? how did you go about picking? how much of this had you never heard before/forgotton about, etc?
BTW, is "Crab Wrapper" insulting to those who work for the paper? I've heard that moniker for years.
And I'M the one with the ego? ;)
Ok, the Method:
Using 15 websites including , but not limited to, Billboard, acclaimed music, pop culture madness, cash box pop charts, individual radio stations year end countdowns and super70s.com we recorded every song from every site from every year into an excel sheet, noting year, and placement in each chart it was in.
Some songs were in just 1 chart, some (or a few) were in ALL charts.
These songs totalled 1756.
Then, the songs were then placed into groups, 1-100, 100-250, 250-500, 500-1000, 1000-1750.
Songs that may have been in only 1 chart, at number 87, went in the 1000-1750 group.
Songs that were in more than 7 charts, and were generally in the top 10 of their year, went in the 1-100 category.
After these were done, we looked at them in smaller groups.
and ranked them basically in order in how they fared on the countdowns.
Don McLean was in all 10 year end charts, and all 5 decade charts.
year end he placed 2,3,9,4,1,2,3,2,4,2
decade charts: 13,8,25,20,47
better than any other song.
some songs were moved up or down a bit cause of personal preference: Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" may have no business in the top 20. and chartwise, "Close To You" by the carpenters, probably should be way higher than 125.
Either way, this really isnt much opinion involved , give or take 20 places and less the closer to 1 we got.
Also, we had to take some songs into consideration, like "Ziggy Stardust" , only made 1 chart, at number 4, but realistically, we couldnt put it at number 1264!!! Since some songs stood the test of time better and some songs even were reborn later in time for whatever reason.
I hope thats not too confusing, i do have a job and have to get something done today.
I dont think there is a lot of stuff thats been left out as far as anything played on the radio. Surely Kosmo and some other 70's dwellers could find tons of shit i didnt put in.
I'll do better with that stuff when i tackle the 1980s.

If you had done the top 1970 of the 1970's, now that would've been awesome.

i'd say the most time consuming was actually getting all of the songs…..thats where 3 three friends and uncle came in.
So awesome: 1722 Dickie Goodman Mr. Jaws 1975
Huh?: 1024 beatles, the got to get you into my life 1976
Do you mean Earth, Wind and Fire's version, or did this somehow chart again in the 70s?

I dont think there is a lot of stuff thats been left out as far as anything played on the radio.Up to the mid 70s at least, there were still regional differences in radio airplay. I'm 47 so once in a while I remember a good song that got tons of airplay but got forgotten, perhaps it had just been big in my market. Like recently the tune "Run Run Run" (JoJo Gunne) came back to me in the shower… that got tons of airplay when I was a kid; as much as a lot of the crapola that's include in the Classic Rock canon.
Hey, these rank higher than your #1 because they're decimals:
.5 real kids-all kindsa girls
.4 beat-don't wait up for me
.3 shoes-tomorrow night
.2 dwight twilley-i'm on fire
.1 nrbq-ridin in my car
Do you mean Earth, Wind and Fire's version, or did this somehow chart again in the 70s?apparently it did!!!!
and since i was not alive during all of this, i suppose its a stupid entry.
also, dont be surprised if a song is in there twice. i found one and fixed it, but you never know!

NOT ENOUGH BOWIE period.
there were some bands i did basically think i could put their whole catalog in there.
this was harder for me since i dont remember the 70s (i was 2 when they ended)
I am starting the eighties soon, that should be easier.
i would think "Cracked Actor" and "Queen Bitch" would AT LEAST make the cut!!
It's official. You've wasted your entire life.

Maybe, but that's only like 14 years down the drain. He's still got time to recover.
