So you can speak for everybody in the crowd for every minute of the show……Quite impressive.
Please forgive me, Guiny. I didn't mean to speak for you. Please feel free to share with us your thoughts on the performance. I would hate to think that the deafening roar of the crowd before and after each act and song led me to an incorrect assumption.

Oh, I am so confused….. Did he do a cover at all then the last time at Blackcat? I just remember spiders from marrrrrrrssss, and thinking, "that is not right".
Originally posted by Celeste:I just think that the peformers fed off of the audience. Call it ego call it energy, whatever you want. A good crowd can help the act push the performance to another level. You can define good however you want. I think of it as appropriate for the act you are seeing. Last nights crowd was appropriate for the act.
From time to time people mention audience reaction, like oh, the crowd was so lame, nobody wasa dancing, etc…I myself don't see what a big deal the audience reaction is…I go to see the band/act, not the audience! I like when the audience is as unobtrusive as possible, myself…
Originally posted by Celeste:The audience reaction is a useful tool for explaining the general reaction to a show. That is, to show how the bulk of people responded to a show rather than just how the individual writing the review felt.

If people are talking amongst themselves, it's an indication that the show was a little dull. If the crowd is going crazy, the show was probably pretty good. It's an art not a scince mind you.

I think the crowd makes a big difference. Nothing more off-putting than really loving a band, and being surrounded by a bunch of hipsters with their arms crossed across their chests, too cool to smile or tap their feet. Big buzz kill, and makes you very self-conscious about jiggling about in your space.
I'm not saying I prefer chaos and mania – I also go to see the band, not have a "rockin' night out,' but a lively crowd can really make a show. It made a big difference last night (that show could have been a snooze if the crowd watched with detached interest), as well as the Sex Pistols show.
But this is why you may like shows at the Birchmere way more than I do….

I just don't think you would get the same atmosphere in a theater. I think the audience reaction in a theater would have been much more subdued, which I think would have made for a much weaker show.
Rhett did Bowie at the Kennedy Center.
He did Elvis (Presley) at the Black Cat most recently.
He did the Pixies the first time at Black cat.
Bags, we have only been to one show in 2.5 yrs at Birchmere. That was BR549, and the crowd got pretty raucous. But it was in keeping with the performance. I think they have the no audience noise rule because most of the acts that play there are "quiet" acts, not loud rock and roll acts. Thus, quiet acts should call for a quiet audience. If you're seeing a band that plays loud music, well by all means the audience should make some noise.
