Rock And Roll Hotel

Neat little place. The sound is not the greatest, but I like the atmosphere. I found parking right across the street, and the area isn't nearly as bad as some say it is. My girlfriend and I enjoyed the show, and I'm looking forward to going back for the Ambulance show.

Thanks for the tips, everyone.
It's a nice place, but it can get really obnoxious during a sold out show. I.E. follow everyone's advice and get there early or else you will be unpleasantly cramped in the back and won't be able to see anything.
Sound is iffy; the last time I was at the Hotel it was some of the worst I have ever heard at a show. But at this point, they book many of the bands that used to play the Cat so I take what I can get…

They upgraded the sound like a month or so ago. Much much better
New sound/lights and larger stage with sight-lines improved due to removal of non-weigh-bearing pillars up front. The advice to get there early and go with a wing-woman/man to guard your "spot" is good: At a show last weekend, the crowd showed up late for the headliners and proceeded to try to jam everyone standing for HOURS up front out of the way. Pretty obnoxious crowd but I guess that depends on the line-up. If anyone is nervous about parking/leaving, the security staff will provide an escort to your car. Also, I think they're still running a shuttle bus from the Union Station metro so you might want to call to confirm that. Nice, attentive bartenders; upstairs lounges are great hangouts before/after music and security is present without being overbearing! They are very strict about underage drinking.

had tix to the Gruff Rhys show but didn't go, the neighborhood has destracted me from going to the venue. I would assume the shows end on the late side, there's no way I'd walk around there late at night - but hey that's DC, low rent = the dodgy parts of the city.
What about set times? Are they exact to what is posted?

The few times I've been there, they're always running late.
According to DCist, the R'n R Hotel has recently hired the "most well-respected sound guy in the city."

They've gotten really good with times since last fall.
jw could I wait outside after a show for a cab to come like 930 and black cat?
You'll be waiting a while.
Ouch. Just four days ago, I was talking up the velvet's great sound to a friend. Hopefully they have a replacement that is just as good.

Probably one of the best rock and roll bands on the planet right now and releasing their current record on esteemed Arts & Crafts.

This is a band that WILL stand the test of time and has never, ever gotten a fanbase from blogs or over hype.

rob curtis is overrated. he does have a great ear, but he created a sound system at the velvet lounge that was more complicated than it should have been. and he also has personal issues that affected his relationships with not only band members but staff as well.

we (the velvet lounge) are in great shape. we hired marcus esposito, who ran sound at the warehouse and who has been one of the best freelance soundmen in the city for years. nikhil ranade, who does sound at the black cat and runs his own studio, is helping out. and we have hired two more competent soundmen with experience. the sound is as good as before, if not better.
It did sound just as good as it's ever sounded last night.
I just got the opportunity to do a poster for The Constantines and it was a pleasure working with them and the club. I'll post it closer to the show. really rocking band.

I know the question was asked awhile ago, but in my experience, it's been really difficult to get cabs after shows. I've even called for cabs, and they've taken up to an hour to arrive or sometimes never came at all, and it's been through sheer luck (and a helpful staff) that I've managed to get home. I like the venue and think they get a lot of great shows, but I've only been to a fraction of the shows I've wanted to because I just don't feel comfortable enough being able to get home as a young female, often alone, relying solely on public transportation.
what kind of showtimes are we looking at for this one?
