This weekend....

Saturday Mary Timony's at Warehouse Next Door with three other bands for just $6:
Mary Timony
Panoply Academy
Horses
Edie Sedgwick

Are the other three bands all local?
thanks, chimbly.

panoply academy are from bloomington, indiana and have been around since the mid-'90s. i guess you could call them post-punk with an experimental bent.

horses is 3 black eyes and 1 et at it. and that's exactly what they sound like.

edie sedgwick is justin moyer (of el guapo and antelope) in drag. it's quite amusing, though doesn't do justice to my favorite drug-addled debutante of all-time.

Except that I would nitpick on one tiny point, and it's a nitpick so just take it as that.

In my opinion, I think that Jill Sobule got a little too much write up while Martin Sexton, the headliner, was almost written off. I think a little more could have been given to him. Of course, I'd kind of like to see him but absolutely cannot stand Jill Sobule. Maybe I'm just being biased.
Martin Sexton, in my exceedingly humble opinion, is boring and vanilla. I hadn't heard Jill Sobule's name in 10 years, so I thought I'd talk about her.
Check the Iota or Jammin Java listings once in awhile, Mr. Knowitall. She plays those places with some regularity, I do think.

Were you guys there last Friday? We were there 8:30 - 10:15 or so, before the Wrens show – table right in front of the DJ booth, and we LOVED the tunes.

Okay, now I need to do some back peddling here. All along I had been thinking of some other artist; concerning Martin Sexton. Truly sorry about that. Now I know I'm not showing up for the show as I had toyed with depending on how my Saturday was going.

Now I'm going to go crazy trying to figure out who I had been thinking of. Some English guy who probably played with Bert Jansch or Fairport Convention and the likes. Bet Rotten or Snail will know.

i do…you are thinking of martin simpson, who is an amazing celtic fingerpicker and runs in the same circles as richard thompson, bert jansch, and john renbourne.

martin sexton is bland coffeehouse folk.

:)
Thank you!

That's it!

And I agree.

I thought I only had one nitpick, turns out I have a few. Here's one that is glaring: "their syrupy harmonies and white bread hooks…". Is that an opinion or a misspelling?

Okay, it's almost Friday, so I'll give one more pick - What is herky-jerky? More importantly, how is it relative to Post-Punk?

Ah ha, you see – I thought that was a particularly right-on, illustrative description!
Hoya, looks like a complaint of sorts from today's Going Out Gurus transcript:

Washington, DC: Dear Gurus:
There was a good mini-feature in the Express today on the Washington Social Club. But it's unfortunate there was no mention of bass player Olivia Mancini's other band, The Small Shouts, who are playing tonight at the Warehouse Next Door w/ De Novo Dahl (from Nashville) and The Hot Pipes. In fact, the Warehouse Next Door is entirely absent from the Express's music listings, and it's too bad because they put on a lot of good shows. Can y'all help spread the word about tonight?

Joe: Consider the word spread, DC. I haven't seen Olivia's other band, but my bet is they're good. And by the way, I know we have said lots of good things here about Washington Social Club before and we'll repeat them now. If you haven't seen this band yet, get to the Black Cat for their show this Sunday. Just great energy and smart thrilling songs. Really, these guys are that good.

not that i use a thesaurus to come up with every adjective when i write, but this is a good example of "white bread" (i also thought it worked in with the food imagery i had going):

Main Entry: average
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: normal
Synonyms: boilerplate, common, commonplace, customary, everyday, fair, familiar, garden, garden-variety, general, humdrum, intermediate, mainstream, mediocre, medium, middling, moderate, nowhere, ordinary, passable, plastic, regular, run-of-the-mill, so-so, standard, tolerable, typical, undistinguished, unexceptional, usual, vanilla, white bread

Main Entry: inoffensive
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: harmless
Synonyms: calm, clean, friendly, humble, innocent, innocuous, innoxious, mild, neutral, nonprovocative, peaceable, pleasant, quiet, retiring, safe, unobjectionable, unobtrusive, unoffending, vanilla, white bread

if you really want to know, i was going to go with "jejune", but i didnt think that would fly in newspaper-speak

on the herky-jerky note, that's just how i imagine all that bloc party / futureheads / franz music, a lot of angular, jerky riffs and similar antics from the band members themselves … on the post-punk thing, their music harkens back to a certain segment of post-punk music … as you know, labels are meaningless, and post-punk encompassed a million and one styles from synthy goth to power-pop, but i see the crop of bands i was describing as a throwback to a certain group of early 80s "post-punkers" … it's also certainly not an original comparison, it could be considered journalistically lazy, if it didn't apply so well …

That's strange, I mention the Warehouse in most of my columns, but they may not have the comprehensive listing of Warehouse shows up in their club section, I'll look into it …
I know, HS, I thought you mentioned Warehouse an awful lot.
I really wanted to see Emil Beaulieau again @ tarantula hill tomorrow but have no way of getting there. I think I'll settle for the free andrew wk show @ the tavern, which is on the AU campus. That's always a good time (and noteworthy Hoyasax).
