The Ponys poster

Thisposter is for a favorite new band of ours called The Ponys who play the perfect driving at night with the windows down rock music. They will be playing the backstage of the Black Cat on July 23rd with Jay Reatard. The three color silkscreened poster is printed on funky yellow-green paper with a crazy split screen which we nearly broke our arms pulling. Again, this will only be available on our site,
El Jefe Design, as we are taking the next few months off from shows.

I'm shocked that this isn't sold out yet. Is it just because most people aren't aware that you can by tickets for a backstage show? Or has their popularity waned in the last few months?

More the former than the latter, I think. It escaped my notice anyway. I'm still wondering why this is a backstage show in the first place.
Awesome poster, El Jefe.

they headlined the mainstage on a saturday back in march, but more people were there to see the black lips. by the times the ponys were finished there were maybe 100 people watching them. so if that's what they get on a weekend, i can see why it's on the backstage on a monday night during the summer. i never buy posters but will be ordering one of those, nice work.

I agree with this. They might sell out the backstage though.

i love the ponys, but does anyone else think their new record really is weak compared to the old stuff?
the other songwriter who quit has a new band - submarine races - and i think that album is fantastic.

yes, definitely. only the first two songs really stick with you. they got the sound but not the hooks on the rest. "celebration castle" is gonna be tough to top.

thanks for the heads up on this, downloading from emusic now. ian was always a good counter to jared. "CC" had 7 songs sung by jared, 2 by ian and 1 by melissa. new album has all 12 by jared. a bit much.

Short, but good. The Ponys seemed to have equipment problems, but they still sounded ok. Jay Reatard was amazing.

Very good despite some pedal issues for the Ponys. They seemed happier than the last time I saw them, but then again that was at the ottobar where I was one of two people who stuck around to see them after black lips.
Jay Reatard was good. High energy, under 2 min songs. I wish more bands were like that, 12 or so songs in 20 minutes. Perfect opener.
Then I came home and paypal'd my local poster artist.

I am so glad other people thought Jay Reatard were good. I've got all day for bands like that, just 4 guys in a small space, rocking. Awesome. I'll bet their practices involve a lot of weed. The bass player looked and acted just like Jack Black would in a band like that. That could be a good or bad thing – in this case, it ruled. He was awesome.
Ponys were good too. Most of their songs were great, others came and went and I didn't really notice them.

the guitar problems really hampered the first half of the set. the ponys without distortion/overdrive just ain't the same. i'm really glad they switched up the setlist a lot from march, playing lots of stuff from "laced with romance" and "celebration castle." it was pretty good, but the ponys are basically there to ROCK and jay reatard is better at bringing the ROCK. good times for a monday night.

I am now getting to the point where I will be holding a grudge against my unborn kid for making me miss so many shows, be it Detroit Cobras and now The Ponys. This kid better be cute damnit! Back to working on Decemberists posters.
