on CNN:
Roller Derby - it's baaaaack. looks like once again you're ahead of the curve… but do you stick it out, now that it's above-ground? ;)
and since we're on the topic - with regards to the upcoming MBV album, you wrote:

Hahahah. Yes, there was a big mass mailing among the roller girls about the spot…WaPo also recently did a big Style piece on it too, complete with video.
But of course I'm sticking with it! I've worked way too hard not to, ha.
I went with Mya Bloodie Valentine as my name. My number is <3.
So now the only question is, when are you all going to organize the boardie meet-up at one of my bouts?

So, do you have one bout and then not do anything for sixteen years?

given the "mya", i would have went for the stereotypical italian accent angle: mya bloodi valentina :)
cool name, will definitely have to make it out to a bout. where do you skate, and on what night(s)? is there a schedule up somewhere? this project is going to cramp my style, need to be strategic about when i take off (eh).

I still have to see a match of this.
What happened to JonBenet Slammsy? Changed out of respect for your mother? I still think Elsie D. Poundsystem was a pretty good name.

The story with JonBenet Slamsey is that the name was registered by some girl in Madison, Wis., the day before I made the league. Pretty frightening some other girl has the same sick sense of humor I do, huh?
But (like I've sort of explained to some of you before) there is the whole rollergirl thing where everyone chooses orginal name. There is an active site which lists the now more than 10,000 registered derby names… so the day after I found out I made it, I checked just to be sure…and it was gone and I was a sad panda.
So much deliberation later…I am Mya Bloodie Valentine…
AND for planning purposes, the next season doesn't start until April and the schedule isn't even out yet. So you all have plenty of time to clear your schedules… just be aware the bouts are on Sundays, once a month, at Putty Hill Skateland in Baltimore.

If we have a boardie meetup at a competition, I'll come if I know far enough in advance.

I spent my childhood at putty hill skateland. Broke my wrist there while wearing my strawberry shortcake skates.

Now, I'm not trying to be negative, but how often are people seriously injured at this? Because I'm watching some on youtube, and this looks like a death sport.

What do you consider seriously injured? Like a broken leg? I only know of a couple girls in my league that are currently out for some broken bones… I've been to a few bouts and have yet to see anything break. And I don't know what leagues you're watching, but CCRG is pretty good about training girls in order to avoid injuries… I mean, I have practice +/- six hours a week and this is the off-season. So in reality, I don't think it's really any more dangerous than any other contact sport.
HOWEVER, watch some Renegade Roller Derby and be afraid. Thats the full contact, skating without a helmet, multiple fist fight type shit.

Since you're a writer, will you ever write a behind-the-scenes expose about what goes on in roller derby locker rooms….and showers.
Brian
P.S. Follow-up. Is it anything like sorority house showers?

Hahahaha I love it.
Wasn't there a short-lived weekly roller derby show on some cable network a few years ago? I want to say it was on tnn?

I will do these things once you quit assuming I have an English degree.
