Hair Cuttery

A few thoughts just passed through my head while getting a haircut:
1) None of the hairdos on any of the women working today inspired confidence in their ability.
2) Why do they always slick my hair back and send me out into the world? And why am I too nice to say "Please don't slick my hair back"?
3) Why are they playing Christmas music?
Is there a hipper place to get a hair cut that's also cheap? Where do you kids get your cuts?

What do you consider "cheap" for a men's haircut?

I bought a $20 set of clippers a couple years ago and now just buzz all my hair off once every 6-8 months.
He probably doesn't mean
that cheap though. :(

I'd rather not pay more than $20, but seeing as I am an adult nowadays (crushing, I know), I'm open to suggestions, even if it is a bit more. Can't hurt to know.

I started a simliar thread several years ago, and a couple of people pointed me to Bang on U Street, and now near the MCI Center. Though I think my criteria was a "trendy yet reasonably priced cut", rather than "cheap". Their men's haircut has risen from $25 to $33, but I'm hooked.

I was a Bubbles man for many years. Had the same haircutter for 10+ years. Finally, I just said to hell with it, bought some clippers, and buzz every month or so.

My advice would be to simply stay away from anywhere with attempt to be a funny play on words involving hair.
I.E. The Hair Force / Hair Force 1 / The Hairport
But then again, I spend $70 on just a simple haircut. So what do I know?

Why not go to a simple barber shop. Find one run by the Koreans. Not only do they give a good cut on the cheap (I never pay more than $13), you get the straight razor cut on the neck and edges…and a nice head and neck massage to boot.

When I'm not shaving my head myself, I go to the Asian lady on the corner from my apt who charges $10.
I tip 20% or $2, sometimes $3 if she entertains me with a wacky Asian story.
No happy ending.

I second Bang. I'd stay away from Bubbles, they wreaked havoc on my hair, but I am a girl and it is probably harder to mess my hair up than yours. PR Partners Friendship Heights branch is also good, but probably a little pricey.

speaking of hip hair, i've been thinking of getting my hair cut to resemble will reid ('86)… i wouldn't have normally made this decision but ever since i woke up after partying one night with a patch on the bottom of my head that's considerably shorter than the rest, i'd like a new look so i won't have to keep wearing it up.
my mom works in a salon, so i've never had a real haircut from anyone but her. i'm wondering if i went to hair cuttery or that bang place and asked for a girlier:

(right)
they'd be able to produce. i could always try to cut it myself.

I wouldn't suggest the shotgun blast to the face haircut…

Last time I went I tipped $30 on a $180 hair color…I hope that's ok because now I need to go back for a cut.

Sounds like a few have buzz cuts. Easy and comfortable, but not for all!
And, don't ever, ever try and cut or repair your hair (after partying or some mishap with a flame) unless you know what you are doing.

You see, these are the things women need to get out in the open before a guy gets married. So I'll expose it for the rest of the men who may be in the dark, like I was.
The first time I found out what Smackette pays to get her hair done, I nearly passed out. When I saw the $160 out of the checking account I called to ask her what that was for because I thought someone had stolen her card. She, matter of factly said no, that's what a hair cut costs for women (I learn later that is styling plus color and something else that I just block out). "I hope that includes happy ending!" was my repsonse. I still can't believe women agree to pay that much.
Anyhow, so now, by arrangement, she pays cash and takes out a little bit here and there and puts it away so I don't have to know how much it costs. I just can't stomach it.
I've never asked her what she tips, and frankly, I don't want to know.

Yes, that's a killer isn't it! I guess the alternative is having her look haggard, but it's a brutal expense. And to think I get a hard time for CD shopping in bulk…I can get 30 discs if I played my cards right for that kind of dough.

Did you ever ask or notice how long it takes? Last time I went to CA I had my hair done (IT NEEDED IT & it cost the same). I never heard the end of it & about how it took 2 hours (okay, 3 - we were talking!).
Vansmack - she probably tips 20%, most do, and don't go over; unless they are repairing something.
