Why do you care so much?

Blog reading is not compulsory. If you don't like it, don't click on it.
because brian is part of the "me" generation, so he likes to hear (read) himself complaining… sorta like the bloggers he goes on and on about.

i suspect the irony of this will be lost upon him.
SOMEBODY has to deflate all of your "I'm THE cultural critic of the AUGHTS! I'm the NEXT OSCAR WILDE!" pretensions. Seeing no one else reaching for the pin, I took it upon myself.

You're welcome.

Brian
my musings on future politicians of the me generation … did anyone read those excerpts of hillary's letters from college? they were embarrassing, but i can't even imagine what will start to come out from web 2.0 stuff

(yes, i realize the irony of including this blog-post as a contribution to this discussion)
Of, puh-leeze.

This message board is all about trying to show off how witty your banter is, how wise you are on any subject from consumer law to soccer to philosophy, and how much cooler your pop culture tastes are than the other guy. It's completely about showing off.

Just like a blog.

I'm not a blogger, but don't quite understand your harsh criticism. You've made over 2600 posts on this message board alone, and who knows how many posts on other message boards. How is such prolific posting of your thoughts on message boards for consumption by the random masses any different than someone posting a blog?
I think there's a big difference. This message board is like a big McLaughlin Group. We profer opinions, smart-ass comments and inside jokes on a variety of pretty meaningless topics.

Blogs are a cult of "me." They wouldn't even bother me so much if the blogs were about something they are passionate about. But they aren't. Most blogs I've read read like a school assingment that you HAVE to turn in or you won't get full credit. They are soapboxes that no one feels like standing on.

Let's hear nkotb's "thoughts" about blogging…I'm all ears.

you've just indicted yourself, as you have the highest post count of anyone on this board :D
You'll have to read my latest blog post about the evils of blogging.

Guilty as charged.

No way. I'm serving a higher purpose. I'm trying to save the world one cynical/Starbucks-drinking/over-educated/ipod-wearing D.C. hipster at a time.

i find your quest entertaining, but i always feel like you're just a hair off … i would think that the hipper-than-thous would mock bono as a clown and sneer at u2's music

EDIT: or you're saying that you're bono, on a quixotic quest to cure hipsters of malaria and the hiv … i think i get it now
I can't speak for the millions of other people with blogs out there, but I started my blog in an attempt to stop littering my friends' email boxes with 10 emails a day about new music, albums, tour dates, etc. I figured it was easier to have one place they could come if (and when) they wanted to rather than bombard them with email…

When I started getting free promo CDs in the mail from bands, that pretty much sealed the deal for me. I don't think my opinions are more important than anyone else's, but if you're gonna send me free music in return for posting my thoughts now and again, why would I want to stop?

Yeah, blogs are basically just the traditional Christmas letter reborn and perennialized. A good way to stay in touch with friends and acquaintances, and maybe meet other like-minded souls.

It's only when bloggers start calling themselves "citizen journalists," or blogging about blogging, when yew've got yerself a problem.
There are SO many blogs worth reading out there, mainly because everybody has to have one, if you ignore the idiots and find the smart people you have yourself some great reading on any topic in the world. I dont know most of the people whose blogs I read, and I don't think any of them talk about what they had for lunch. Better reading than most traditional media any day of the week.

Does anybody read the newspaper or watch the news anymore and think to themselves, damn, this is really what I give a shit about.

And anybody who goes out of their way to call themselves a citizen journalist is a dick and an asshole by default.
