Dude, your life must be uneventful, unfullfilling, or at least uninteresting if you're thinkin' this far ahead…
Dude, I have a 12pm Wednesday deadline, dude.

Although it would be cool if I could just write this on Friday and have it magically appear in the paper that day.

Chimbly, I thought this thing on pitchfork was amusing … I really like the decemberists, but this is pretty dead on:

Jeremy Baron's Worst Songs On Otherwise Great Albums 2003
"Every rose has its thorn" - Poison and/or Jeremy Baron

Perfection is something no one should desire to achieve; Shinto monks were so afraid of perfection that upon building one of the scores of temples that dot the Japanese landscape, they would make a point of it to leave one stone out of place. Why? Because after reaching perfection, nothing else can attain the same level. It's all downhill from there.

We'll never see someone construct a perfect anything, and albums are no exception. For every Kid A, there's a "National Anthem"; for every Yankee Hotel Foxtrot there's a "Reservations." Sometimes, an album that otherwise strikes you as gorgeous contains that one fucking song that's so tragic it almost ruins the whole experience. And this year's classics are no exception. Here they are, from nine to one (because if I did a list of ten… oh, never mind). - Jeremy C. Baron

06 The Decemberists, "The Chimbley Sweet" (Her Majesty the Decemberists): Christ, these guys are such fucking geeks. I'm sorry, but someone had to say it. Sure, they make good music, and their Elizabethan/Victorian themes make for some pretty intriguing lyrics. But sometimes, through dweeby lyrics and simply ludicrous composition, Colin Meloy and crew give us a look at their high school selves– the kids who would get their tighty whiteys hoisted on the flagpole while their heads got shoved into toilets. Spelling "chimney" and "sweep" incorrectly isn't endearing– it makes me want to give 'em all a good slap. The music doesn't help: awkward electric guitar lines and high-pitched vocals stand out amongst the overall lameness of this song. Decemberists, it's wedgie time.
I'm quite dismayed that I'm missing all three of these shows:

The High Strung, Capitol Years, BC (Thurs, 3/3)

Secret Machines, 930 (Fri, 3/4)

Ambulance Ltd, VHS or Beta, Black Cat (Sat, 3/5)
PS – is anyone going to Centro-matic at DC9 tonight?? If they're third in the lineup, any idea when they might go on??

Also, DJ Indiesoc at Cafe Saint Ex tonight. Great flyer…..

Thought about going to Centro-Matic tonight, but just don't want to be out that late on a work night.

But will it be late? Didn't DC9 originally intend to have shows early so the DJ could rule?
I've never been to DC9, but their website says all shows start at 9, and there are three bands…that's what I'm going on, unless i read differently…

Bless DC9 – they actually answered my email in less than an hour (something Black Cat has never achieved; I've gotten start times from them mid-show!).

Centro-matic goes on at 11:00. As I live super close, I'm there…

I'm missing the latter two. Bummer, hold the dude.

EEEEeeeeenteresting. I didn't realize this was the "tell me what I should tell the world so that it's overrun with people" thread.

I don't think I'll be saying much here anymore…

ps– it's not Chimbly Sweet.
As my bedtime is 10-10:30, I will play some South San Gabriel and Will Johnson (don't have any Centro-Matic) before going to bed.

yeah, thats bizarre … i didn't write the thing, just found it amusing …
Its just another case of Pitchfork being wrong on multiple levels. I really do not understand how you can single that song out. Its not incongrous on the album at all.

i generally agree … but i usually read their stuff more for the writing than for the "ideas" … i love snarky criticism, and they've got a good formula going
First, "Chimbley" is a real word. Moreover, it's a Victorian word and, thus, fits perfectly with the theme of the album. Pitchfork should try not to flaunt their etymological and literary ignorance. They should read a little more Dickens.

Second, the name of the song is Chimbley "Sweep" not "Sweet." Both the band's website and the label's website list the song as "Chimbley Sweep." I'm not sure where Pitchfork got "Sweet" from.

Labeling the band "geeky" may very well be accurate, but Pitchfork should remember that the first rule of being snarky is getting your facts right.

here here!
really, though. them not knowing the real title of a song, and then using their wrong title to make fun of the song– that's classic.
GGW,

Read my previous post for an explantion of the Swee"T" fuck up.

And for what it is worth chimbley is not in Dictionary.com or several other online dictionaries, although it is probably how my dad would try to say and spell it.
