Caught the last ten of "Subterranean" on MTV2 last night. Despite the fact that I want to throw bricks through my television everytime I see Jim Sheridan, overall decent music. I wonder, though, why the show has been relegated to a single hour? It just makes me long for the days of 120 minutes, which in addition to supplying me with two hours of obscure music also had better hosts for the most part.
Did any of you ever tape those? Specifically, there was an episode where Thurston Moore hosted, and his musical selection was just phenomenal.

even worse, they tend to play the same songs for a couple weeks straight … if you only have 1 hour of indie programming in a 168 hour week, why play the same songs over and over?!?!
plus, the staff assembling the show seems to be intern-heavy, they often screw up the video info before/after songs and sometimes accidentally play the same song twice in a night
sheridan also blows, but that's why tivo is so fucking great, just fast forward through him and the crap songs to get to the good stuff.
also, you can get all these videos online now (unlike in the 120mins days), but i think part of the fun is seeing these semi-obscure bands on the tube for all (who have premium cable/satellite) to see.

I have at least three shows taped…the one when the Afghan Whigs hosted in 1998-ish, the show devoted to REM circa Up and the one devoted to Nothing records (during my "I heart Trent" period).

They cut it down to an hour because of low ratings.
Btw, MTV still produces 120 Minutes (as well as Alternative Nation)… but it's only available on MTVEurope channels.

geez, i probably have around 10 tapes worth of 120 minutes at my house. .ranging from 1992-1993 and 95-97. . .i had them all catalogued at one point. . .
these include dave kendall as host, lewis largent and matt pinfield. . .as well as several music hosts. ugh. . .i hated lewis largent. i remember an episode where pavement was on, and they were out supporting crooked rain, crooked rain, and malkmus just layed into largent for his stupid questions. it was funny.

I also miss
IRS's The Cutting Edge, the MTV show that pre-dated 120'. Pete Zaremba of The Fleshtones hosted.

120 minutes - Teenage Fanclub, good song.
I don't wanna be alone
I don't wanna be well known
I don't wanna be unsane
I don't wanna love in vain
I don't wanna need a change
I don't wanna be arranged
I don't wanna be amazed
I just wanna see your
face again
Be my friend
I don't wanna another drink
I don't wanna have to think
I don't wanna stay the same
I don't wanna another name
I don't wanna be defamed
I don't wanna be acclaimed
I don't wanna be amazed
I just wanna see your
face again
Be my friend

I would kill for those tapes. I had a bunch of them taped for a while, but over time they've disappeared. Those were SO fun. God bless Zaremba….
I emailed MTV2 about cutting Subterranean to an hour – it's nuts. Whaddya gonna do.

So, let us dig through our tapes and see what we have. I have a best of IRS cutting edge with such classics as Run DMC rapping live off the back of a truck driving through LA (I think that is where) and the Minutemen. It was a brilliant show.

Wasn't that show or some other vintage mtv show hosted by the singer of the fleshtones? Or am I totally tripping here?

Yep, is both. Peter Z was great as a host.
Also have some classic Night Flight bits from USA network. That show ruled!

Ya know, they're putting everything that was ever on TV on DVD these days (how many of you have been snagging the
King of Queens sets? ). MTV's sitting on a goldmine, and not just with the
Cutting Edge stuff. Of course, the song licensing might hike the price a little but the real classic stuff could be licensed for a lot less than your typical TRL hits.

Just after posting this I realized that IRS Records probably owns the
Cutting Edge stuff. But that doesn't mean it can't be DVD'ed. C'mon Miles!

The sad thing is that MTV had that fire in either the late 80s or early 90s that burned up a lot of their archival stuff. A lot has been lost to the ages because of that.
