Tilly and the Wall

I was very surprised by how great these guys were on Saturday night. The vocals were amazing, almost a choir effect up on stage, and members of the band claim they do not use vocal pedals of any kind. Very impressive. I think they should use a live drummer for all of their songs, but the tap dancing percussionist still had her charms. The band was filming an performance for Pancake Mountain during sound check. It was really cool to see all the kids up on stage.
The clov might have played their best Black Cat gig yet on top of that. Was not in love with David Dondero, but his merch guy was cool enough.

I doubt it sold out, but it was certainly at the sound booth and beyond, which is a great sign.

That was the third time I've seen Tilly. It was great to finally see them headline a show. I don't know what it is about them. I feel like I should hate this band - they go against almost all my musical preferences, but I still can't help but love 'em. That was definitely one of the most fun shows I've been to this year, right up there with The Pogues and Art Brut.
Exit Clov were awesome as usual. I'll have to agree with redsock and say that was probably their best Black Cat show. Hearing them play "Silent Feet" again was definitely a highlight. And David Dondero wasn't terrible, but he just seemed out of place in between these two bands.

hahaha…i can admit that i hate this band. saw them open for bright eyes (who i also despise…i was working at the 9:30 that night), and they were terrible. i was hoping someone would throw a pair of tap-dancing shoes at them and knock one of them out. it would've been fine, the 9:30 has a paramedic on duty.

Wow, that's a pretty awful pic. They're definitely not for everyone, and you really have to be in the mood to listen to 'em. But the bottom line is that they're some talented songwriters and put on a really good show.

really? i think it's a fun, light-hearted expression of their adorably cute personalities! … don't you just want to pinch their cheeks!! so kewl!!
and the best part of the band is their fans! they're the wierdo saddle creek obsessives and "the fun kids" from high school drama club who just like to wear funky clothes and laugh and dance and have a great time! by the way, why aren't you dancing either?! this is great! … let those pasty dour feminist drama nerds have their dresden dolls! they'll take tilly and the wall! and like it!!
i saw them open for someone at black cat (rilo kiley maybe?) a while back and just loved them.

I love the first record. The new one, I'm not sure about yet. It has grown on me a bit, but seems less spontanious I guess than the debut.

Hmmm, seems to be a pretty divided group here. Tilly's sugary pop is not for everyone, but if you like the group sounds heard in bands like Architecture in Helsinki or even the Polyphonic Spree, you may very well like these guys.
I am neither a drama nerd or a Saddle Creek hanger-on. I just like catchy pop songs, and this band has plenty of those. However simple, I kind of like it that way. Plus, they actually look like they have a good time on stage, and so few bands even try to go through that motion lately. That goes a long way.

don't take things so seriously/personally, i'm just playing around and blowing off some steam while i work … and i'm an equal-opportunity asshole, i'll make fun own tastes just as much as anyone else's!
