DC/VA rootsy rockers

what is the deal with this area and its obsession with rootsy trad "rockers" like vertical horizon, pat mcgee band, eddie from ohio, the list goes on and on and on.

you think it's unique to this area?

obsession? must have missed that

dont all areas have local favorites, pat mcgee is hardly a big national name, and vertical horizon only had 1 hit, i don't know eddie from ohio, I just know they play the Birchmere alot

oh and dont forget the hooch, I mean everything

just seemed like that kind of sanitised rootsy rock is much bigger here than anywhere else … everything is another of them …

how many of them come from the UVA area? Isnt that where Dave Matthews started?

well they are all from different parts of Virginia except for Vertical Horizon, which is from Georgetown U, which might as well be Virginia, I blame Virginia, dont they have tons of singer songwriters in arlington as well

If you are referring to VA then yes, I agree with you. Review demographics / geography: colleges, Appalachia, SW VA, the beach, all reasons for that type of music to be popular in those areas. everything started in JMU, ergo the popularity in VA. Yes, I think DMB started in UVA.
Eddie from Ohio is popular b/c (some?) members went to Tech.

That sort of music has always had a strong following here. It's just not the kind of music that most of us here are into so don't discuss it much. It generally appeals to those who like live music but don't bother to keep up with the latest and greatest like all the hipsters do. Probably attracts a bit older crowd too from those who were into the Blues back when that genre was very popular amongst the rockers. Maybe some of the old crowd from the Cellar Door, The Bayou, Blues Alley and No Fish Today (Baltimore). Also, a lot of listeners from the original HFS and WRNR.

having dj a couple of those shows, they are really just huge pickup events. imagine a club full of women in tight jeans yakking away at the top of their lungs. (vansmack just booked a flight).

i've never heard the clamor so loud at the club as during the warmup act for the pat mcgee band. of course it was the lead singer for everything doing among other things an acoustic cover of a bob marley song :roll:

the music is non offending background noise for most people at those shows.

That band had so much potential back before they got signed to Capricorn. They had a somewhat heavy sound like 311 mixed with their horns, etc. and people switching up instruments. They were great live back when the Bayou was still around, but once they got signed it was all downhill from there.

emmet swimming pretty much the same thing happened to them. I've always liked much of their stuff and yes, I own 4 of their albums. :) When they got signed and started working with more mainstream producers it kinda killed them, plus when Tamar quit playing drums that kinda took out the biggest thing about watching them play live! He's like a machine behind the drums! One of the best I've ever seen…would love to see him and John Paul (Clutch) go at it head to head!
