Underage Nightclubs

You can set the rules for your household, my wife and I will set the rules for ours. Cool? I'm not saying what other parents should do. I'm just saying what I will do as a parent.

And as a former schoolteacher, I can tell you it sucked having students in my class who were clearly lacking in sleep. But I don't teach anymore, so it doesn't really matter to me.

I think that's part of the problem these days, parents "backing down." Parents need to assert their authority, and stick to it. A household isn't a democracy.

I return to the fact that I, and most other people I know, turned out OK.
well this is entirely theoretical, since I don't plan to have kids. Just glad you weren't my parents. :p

well im from the SF Bay Area. In high school I was always at shows on week nights. Friends and I would drive in from the suburbs, see the band, and make it home in time for classes :) with usually a good amount of sleep! seems i turned out mostly well adjusted! It seems in SF theres a lot more clubs to see bands, and alot of the venues were all ages. Of course now that im not so young anymore, I def. prefer the 18+/21+ shows.
come on, you can say which city. . .

same here. . although there was one or two clubs in san francisco that was 18 or 21+, and i couldn't get in to. . .bottom of the hill maybe. . and. . i can't remember the name of the other one, although kevin pollack was a co-owner. however, most of the shows i wanted to go also did a south bay show (palo alto), which is much closer to san jose.
i dont remember much where i went to in high school. i know i saw some bands at the warfield of course, and there were plenty of smaller places. cant remember if slims, or bimbos was age restricted. im from the north bay - marin county, novato to be exact. i remember when i was 15 or so, and the edge in palo alto (i think that was the name of the club) had something for the younger aged folk. and they were playing so much ska! oh god that was a long time ago!

What time did the hardcore shows get over? And were they in venues that served alcohol?
sure, but you had to expect ian mackaye to run off the stage and smack the beer out of your hand and break your cigarettes.

rock on!!!

bimbos! that was one club that was age restricted. the edge was the club i would go to all the time. . saw so many shows there while in high school. wandered up to the fillmore, warfield and slims for shows every so often.

ahhh, yeah. . the edge did have quite a few ska shows. . .but then, ska was big in san jose during the late 80s-early 90s, being home to skankin' pickle and all.

Gosh-golly you are old! :D

Couldn't you drink as an 18-yr old back then?
Yes, yes, it's true. I'm old.

I missed the drinking age change by one year (so it must have changed in 1984?); I had a friend who had thankfully flunked 3rd or 4th grade, and she could buy us booze. ;) I had a fake i.d., though, from the age of 18 or so on….

Actually, after 18 it wasn't much of a big deal in regards to the St. Pete area anyhow as I was away at school.

oh you're right.. bimbos was age restricted! and it was the fillmore that i couldnt think of! dont know how i forgot that one, and probably a few others.

the edge was indeed a cool place. my cousin was friends with the guys in skankin' pickle.. good times. i learned how to skank there and all. :)

Really? Sounds like you are to me:

And high school (and middle school) students have no business being in a rock club on a schoolnight. That's just ridiculous parenting.

I didn't read the article…or most of the responses for that matter, but here's my take on age/adult/child.

Why can't there be a "standard age" for adulthood? At age 18, you can be sent to war, vote for your leaders, take control of 2,500lbs of metal on the road……BUT EVIDENTLY NOT RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO GO FOR A PINT!

I'm not sure about doodleville, but when I was riding public transport in England, at 14 you were an adult on the buses and trains. What is it on an aircraft these days? 16?

Talk about a moving goalpost.

I think at age 18 you're an adult….period! So should be held personally responsible for everything you do and be given responsiblity to do it.

Tell me why I'm wrong.
Well, ill be 18 in July, and i still would perfer older crowds, but then again, kids should be able to see their bands just like anyone else. Yes, on a school night isnt a smart idea, but i dont have to worry about that since i graduated when i was 16 ;) Come on, do you really believe anyone is going to miss Garbage? I mean, they ARE the shit.

I won't. If you can be sent to war and put to death for a crime, you should be able to drink fuckin' Pabst Blue Ribbon.
I would comprise at 19, that way more college students can get their buzz on legally… more money for the clubs as well ;)
