Stern's Melendez to Announce 'Tonight Show'
By MICHAEL P. WEINFELD
The Associated Press
Thursday, February 19, 2004; 12:54 PM
WASHINGTON - Jay Leno's new announcer on NBC's "The Tonight Show" will be "Stuttering" John Melendez from Howard Stern's radio show, a spokeswoman said.
Melendez will start March 29, replacing Edd Hall, who's leaving the show after 12 years to concentrate on doing movies.
He is working with a speech coach to help with his announcing, a "Tonight Show" spokeswoman told The Associated Press Wednesday.
Besides announcing, Melendez will be in sketches and will go out on interviews. Melendez is famous for embarrassing the people he talks to, but he won't be doing that sort of interview for Leno, the spokeswoman said.
"Tonight Show" executives became interested in Melendez after seeing him on the ABC reality show "I'm a Celebrity: Get Me out of Here." The spokeswoman said Melendez came across as a "peacemaker" and "family man."

I have no idea or perspective as to whether this is good, bad or indifferent.

Haaha ha ha….yeah, I know.
Actually, I'm a big Stern fan, and I have no perspective as to whether it's good, bad or indifferent! It's just fascinating to me, as (1) Leno is SO mainstream, (2) the man stutters folks!, (3) they say he won't do his embarrassing interviews – what else is he good for?

Can't stand Stern personally, I find him about as funny as having a colonoscopy.
Each to their own though. :)

I understand people not liking Stern. He's the only talk radio guy I like – it goes back to college days when I'd hear his show come on while pulling an all-nighter on a paper. Then when I started working in DC, he was a familiar voice, and I got roped in to the whole show. I do hate it when he has strippers on, but you take that with the bickering and discussion among the regulars.
I've been listening for…15 years?

Yeah, I don't think you can listen to Stern for a 15 minute stretch and 'get it.' It's because I know the whole host of characters (not fake ones, like on Zoos, but real people) that I love the discussions.
And yes, mainstream, but in a very different way from Leno.

I don't even know what a coloscopy is, so it all flies right by me. Sounds like something I don't want to know about.

It's actually a natural progression.
Jimmy Kimmel was a writer and sports guy for a radio show in LA before he made it big on the Man Show (Adam Corolla was with him there as well).
I'm sure there are countless other examples of radio guys in other markets moving to voice over or hosting jobs on Television.
It's all about appearance and the almighty dollar.

Clear Channel is pulling Howard Stern's show off its radio stations. CC president and CEO John Hogan says that the morning driver is "vulgar, offensive, and insulting, not just to women and African Americans but to anyone with a sense of common decency. We will not air Howard Stern on Clear Channel stations until we are assured that his show will conform to acceptable standards of responsible broadcasting."
