down near sixth street, there are some wonderful transient folk who just have the nicest box sets: whole living/dining/bedroom box sets. enjoy the listening pleasure as you try to take them.

"children of nuggets" is solid, but it'd be best if you could get that used or as a trade in. i wouldn't pay MSRP for it. the 59-68 stax set has tons of vital stuff, but it's all inclusiveness is a but overwhelming at times.
i'd pick the "
girl group sounds lost and found" box over both of those. four discs makes it more manageable than stax, and there are just tons of gems. phil spector didn't license any of his songs for it, so it doesn't have all the obvious hits, which is a good thing. it's funny to see some of the names on there: cher, lulu, dolly parton, twiggy.

yeah, i remember kosmo gushing over this when it came out … i have so many potholes i want to fill in my collection that i'd have to place this further down on my wish-list
what do you think of the stax set as compared to the motown and atlantic ones? would it not make sense to get a 'survey course' like "soul spectacular" if i was planning on digging deeper into r&b/soul music?

James Brown's "Star Time" is the Godfather of Box Sets. Be assured: you'll have a funky good time !

And the new "Rockin' Bones" rockabilly collection looks good and has been racking up the rave reviews. Pitchfork gave it at 9.2, whatever that means …

i have this one and love it … only problems are that i already had a good chunk of the songs, and it's a little too scatter-brained, but it's hard not to be when you're wading through so much disparate (but great) stuff
someone where i used to work had mp3s of that conet project thing up on our itunes network … pretty weird shit …

i only have the stax box, but it seems to be that if you really want to dig deeper, you may as well pass over the boxes/comps that give you only the hits. that's what i like about the stax box, all that stuff that would never make the "best of r&b" comps but is every bit as good.

i can understand the criticisms of it just focusing on the played-out mega-hits … and i've heard all of these songs many times before, but i just don't actually have a lot of them in my collection, so it's nice to have good-quality versions of them on CD … plus all these songs really are classics, you can't go wrong with any of them
