Ripoffs

these pop into my head all the time while listening to older music, but this one seemed particularly egregious:

check out new order's "the perfect kiss", then listen to albert hammond jr.'s "back to the 101"

any others?
weezer's sweater song is a total rip off of 'i bleed' by the pixies.

and their hash-pipe song reminds me a lot (a lot) of lita ford's "kiss me deadly".
MCR as a whole reminds me of a second-rate Queen cover band - does that count?
U2's vertigo always made me think of the Supremes you keep me hangin' on. This happens to me all the time with music. It can even just be 3 notes in a row that are the same.

Oooh…one of gf and my favorites is Graham Coxon ripping himself off for his Bittersweet Bundle of Misery song, which we like to refer to as Bittersweet Bundle of Coffee and Tv.

Seriously I have always thought the same thing and I wasn't sure if I came up with it on my own or if I read outside somewhere
I came up with it.

I mentioned a few days ago how CYHSY's "In This Home On Ice" has a chord progression that sounds nearly identical to George Benson's arrangement of "Breezin'."
Your Party by Ween is similar to Into the Great Wide Open. Also didn't the Red Hot Chili Peppers get a lot of shit for ripping off Petty's Last Dance with Mary Jane?

Also, does it count if Nickelback ripped themselves off?
I heard Yo La Tengo's "Let's Save Tony Orlando's House" during my morning commute. The coda reminds me of John Denver's "Sunshine On My Shoulders" but that's probably intentional.

The choruses of both songs have similar chord progressions.
Radiohead-Creep and The Hollies "The Air I Breathe"

Radiohead actually have to pay royalties to the writer of "The Air That I Breathe" due to the "she runs away" part.

Who is the writer of "The Air That I Breathe?" Albert Hammond, SR.

See, how I tied this into the very first post of this thread? I know. I'm awesome.

Oasis are of course the kings of lifting tunes from other sources.

The chorus of "Step Out" is "Uptight" by Stevie Wonder.

The riff in "Cigarettes and Alcohol" is "Bang a Gong" by T. Rex.

The ending of "She's Electric" is "With a Little Help from My Friends" by some English band.

One could go on and on…
Another Ween one; Friends is pretty much the same as a tune Bert &Ernie sang on Sesame St except for adding the disco arrangement
To be honest with you, I don't get most of them. Sure there are similarities but in rock where aren't there similarities? Most songs are the same four/five chords. For example, speaking of Oasis…

Do these two songs...

sound alike?

I don't think so but Noel Gallagher was sued over that one and had to give up royalties.

No one has stated the most obvious and utterly shameless ripoff in history, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet, stealing directly from "Lust for Life" by Iggy Pop?
Nirvana's "Come As You Are" bears a striking resemblance to Killing Jokes "Eighties"… According to Wikipedia there is a bit of a did they or didn't they sue Nirvana over the matter discussion.
"Keep the Car Running" by Arcade Fire reminds me of "On the Dark Side" by Eddie & the Cruisers/John Cafferty.

Of course, AF wears its Springsteen on its sleeve and E&TC was a fictitious E Street Band.
The Modern Lovers "Roadrunner" is a tightened up posi version of VU's "Sister Ray." Even down to the keyboard solo!
