Tipping A Salon Owner

I only allow my precious, precious mane to be touched by people who are quality enough to make enough $$$ to own their own salon. I recently read an article where people were arguing that it's etiquette to NOT tip your hair-dresser if they are the salon owner. Their justification for this was that salon owners set their own prices and none of their money gets split with anyone else, so it's perfectly fine to not tip them. Personally, I find this suspect; tipping is (1) to receive better service, (2) to express appreciation for the service rendered, and (3) to not come off like common, middle-class gutter trash.
What do you all think on this issue? If you pay less than $40/haircut, please do not respond.

I don't pay $40, but my "hairdresser" owns the salon and I always tip her at least 20%.
More is Happy Ending is involved.

Right? This whole "you don't tip the salon owner" thing was way out of their for me, but I was open to the possibility that I had missed something.
I guess I kind of understand the logic behind "you don't tip the salon owner," but it just seems so white trash, like it's stretching for an excuse not to tip.

it's always the people who claim to have, or do have money . . . that have no idea what tippping is about. if you don't know how to tip, you don't deserve the service. go cut your own hair and make your own chinese food.

Maybe it is true, but then insisting on appointments with the owner would be like whipping out a coupon.

I think the basis of the theory is that the salon owner generally charges more then their employees, plus the employees have a percentage taken out and given to the salon owner, whereas the owner, obviously, does not.
Again, I thought it was total garbage from the get-go, just wanted to see if I was missing some societal constraint I'd missed.

That's both timely and apropos to the discussion (although it doesn't mention how much they tip). Could it be you're actually becoming a redeemable member of our community?

I think that people who think it's OK not to tip are cheapskates, no matter what the reason given. They should not go out in public.
If you tip the salon owner, the tip will be appreciated (and it will probably be shared with the staff).
Same with a bar, if the owner happens to be serving you the tip will go to the rest of the staff.

Why don't you post a pic of your haircut and let US be the judge of whether he/she deserves a tip?

Boy, am I gonna stick out my neck and I already know I am NOT going to be very popular. BUT, I think tipping is totally not necessary. And I'll tell you why I feel that way. I worked in a nursing home for over 30 year, cleaning up everything you can imagine. My back is ruined because lifting 200 pounds of dead weight takes its toll. I've been bitten, kicked, hit, spit on, you name it. How much do you think I ever, in all those years got a dime for a tip? Also taking care of the dying, suffering, dealing with unappreciative families—-you know the ones–the ones that could do it better than we do, (but then why weren't they taking care of them at home?)I could go on but I know you have the picture. I was never offered one thin dime and I didn't expect it. I worked there because I liked the job despite everything it stood for. When residents were appreciative for things I did for them, that was all the thanks I needed.
It's not just tipping in salons I resent, it's waitresses, doormen, cab drivers, etc. Do I tip my hair dressers? yes, but I do it begrudgingly. Sorry.

give 15% tip and be done with it. If the owner does not accept $6 as a tip, then you got your answer.

Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck!
Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip?
Mr. Pink: Nah, I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make shit.
Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money that she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a fucking Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you don't ever tip?
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue: Hey, our girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay. She wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.
Mr. Pink: I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's fucked up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college bullshit I got two words for that: learn to fuckin' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big fuckin' surprise.
