Worst Concert Pairing, EVER
Originally posted by eros:pixies opened up for the indoor portion of the zoo tv tour. . .saw them at arco arena in sacto.

Didn't the Pixies open for U2 at one point?
Originally posted by chancegardener:that was a group tour. . so, that's not really fair. in san jose, we got blind melon, live, PiL and BAD II. but, it was billed as an MTV 120 Minutes tour, so to say that they opened for BAD II is misleading.
Alright, pulling out my concert book here. And the worst of the worst were:
Big Audio Dynamite, PiL, Live - Smith Center 1992

It's not completely crazy, I guess, but I'm still scratching my head at the Guster / Ray LaMontangue pairing at WT this summer.
I'm guessing they'd attract the same somewhat mainstream collegiate and post-collegiate crowd?

Originally posted by Bags:How much input do you think the Stones have on something like that? I personally can't see Mick or Keef sitting around and listening to any of these bands.
Originally posted by Shadrach:I'm with you – I'm not really a fan, but I think it's completely awesome that the Rolling Stones do just that. Some recent opening bands for them include Sloan, Metric, Antigone Rising, Brooks and Dunn and QOTSA.
I'd like to see U2 be braver and take a relative unknown on the road with them. I mean they sell out arenas world wide and people aren't buying tickets to see the opening acts. So why don't they use some of that power and pull to help launch the career of a new artist?
Plus, getting to open on a huge tour (U2, Stones, etc) seems like something that is more orchestrated by labels than artists.
Originally posted by El Teezer:it seems to make perfect sense to me … same fan-base, and i like small doses of guster

Rush and Primus was kinda odd but who can really open up for Rush?

Wheeling Civic Center
Wheeling,W.Va.
BLUE OYSTER CULT
supported by…….THE JAM !
1979
Sha Na Na
w/ Special Guest "Dr. Hook"
(don't dis me.. I was 8 years old and lived in Wheeling, WV, forchrissakes!) ..and hey, I mean.. Sha Na Na played Woodstock! ..talk about a weird pairing.. which brings me to…
Does everyone know that Jimi Hendrix opened up for the Monkees on a tour in the late 60's? …now that would be funny.. bringing your kids to a Monkees concert in the late 60's, only to see a black guy making loud guitar rock music that sounds like nothing you've ever heard of… and then lighting the guitar on fire! …oh yeah.. and then to be followed by four vanilla white guys playing "Daydream Believer".
Did anyone else think that last year's Wilco/Roots show @ Merriweather was an odd pairing?
Originally posted by amnesiac:That was my favorite show of last year. Such a great contrast. I also think I was the only person there to see both. I loved watching the fans of each band educating fans of the other band. Still, Wilco played last and by the end most Roots fans had left, leaving the Tweedy adorers alone.

As for Elbow and South, Elbow were just vastly superior; South didn't even register, I have no memory of them. As for the Pixies .. they blew Love and Rockets off the stage, no wonder Daniel Ash pitched a fit on stage. And Emmett opening for Blur and Jeff Buckley, well let's just say it's nice they rode that train while they could .. they got to open for some great bands. But these kinds of pairings are part of the great fun of live concerts, and why as much as possible it's worth seeing opening acts … you never know who will eventually rise to the top. Such as:

Gang of Four and R.E.M - the Bayou 1981
PiL and the Beastie Boys - the Warner 1986
Red Hot Chili Peppers/Smashing Pumpkins/Pearl Jam - Bender Arena 11/91
Mike Watt/Foo Fighters/Hovercraft - Black Cat 1995
etc etc
Screaming Blue Messiahs and Jazz Butcher sometime in '86 on F St. Great show but weird pairing.
I wonder if the Monkees were getting into their "Head" stuff when Hendrix toured with them. "Circle Sky" and "Daydream Believer" sound like they're from two completely different bands.

Maroon Five opened for Cowboy Mouth at Slim's in San Francisco three or four years ago.
I knew something weird was up when a couple dozen teen girls were attending.
