Well, Mastodon sorta reminds me of Rush meets Slayer. No Cookie Monster vocals, a la "Cannibal Corpse," et al.
High on Fire features the bassist from Melvins, sounds a lot like that band as a result, and also reminds me a lot of Motorhead.
I wouldn't recommend a lot of new metal, but I was quite the Anthrax/Metallica/Megadeth/JP/Iron Maiden fan way back, and both of these bands appeal to me.
YMMV.

grotty has got it on spot. Metal is VERY diverse now certainly than it was 15 years ago… WOW! great stuff.
I can do with out the trachiotimy singers as well too most of the time. thank you very much :D

ministry maybe. or primus. maybe einsturzende neubaten. hmmmmm….pfm possibly although some of their songs sound like phish. or diamanda galas if you think he's up to listening to her.
