This.

Hey now, it's a well known fact that if more than 100 people go to a band's show, the band has to suck by default.  ;D

One of my favorite records of this year, which was technically released first in the UK last year, is the Hello=Fire.  Sure the record is "obscure", but it's Dean F. solo album, he of the Waxwings, Dead Weather,  and member of both QOSTA's and Ranconteurs touring band.  Brendan Benson co-produced and it was recorded with members of QOSTA.  The record is straight rock, nothing flashy.

I also really enjoyed several retro soul/r&b/funk releases by the likes of The City Champs, The Sweet Divines, The Haggis Horns.

One of my favorite rock releases was by The Sails, who was a feature artists on Little Steven's Sat Channel.
#1 = Scott 'Wino' Weinrich - Adrift

This record blew me away actually. The man has made classic after classic for 30 years and yet it feels he is still warming up. The best may be yet to come.

Others I enjoyed:

Killing Joke - Absolute Dissent
The Sword - Warp Riders
BXI
Zoroaster - Matador
Kylesa - Spiral Shadow
Drunkdriver - Self Titled
High on Fire - Snakes for the Divine
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis
Deftones - Diamond Eyes
The Black Keys - Brothers
Intronaut - Valley of Smoke
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
EL-P - Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixx3
Harvey Milk - A Small Turn of Human Kindness …WTF…
Cough - Ritual Abuse
Sage Francis - Li(f)e
Nachtmystium - Addicts: Black Meddle pt. 2
Tobacco - Maniac Meat
Tobacco - LA UTI
Priestess - Prior to The Fire
Surroundings - Self Titled

2010 had a lot to offer and I still have so much more to hear!

Just to be clear, "pretentious lists of albums nobody's heard of before" means a list of records you haven't heard, right? So how about you list all of the albums you have heard so we can all take care not to offend your delicate sensibilities.
please somebody stop the list of albums that havent been posted yet. we are all forced to click on this thread

01 tallest man on earth - the wild hunt
02 beach house - teen dream
03 the national - high violet
04 no age - everything in between
05 best coast - crazy for you
06 stars - the five ghosts
07 superchunk - majesty shredding
08 les savy fav - root for ruin
09 male bonding - nothing hurts
10 wavves - king of the beach
A non-pretentious list because I've heard of these bands before?

hey, where's Arcade Fire's The Suburbs?  It won't be pretentious to mention/list it because people have heard of the band, right?

yes they do . . . because now everybody's me

Now everybody's into what I do
Steve Albini, John? and Frank Sinatra sound exactly like me
I even set up a duo with Julio Iglesias
It was called Me and Julio Down By the Crackhouse
'Cause even Julio Iglesias is me
I have the number one album
I have all the albums
'Cause now everybody's me!

All these metal releases listed and no Salome? Easily my favorite metal album this year.

Still nowhere near having a complete list here.
Because Salome are mediocre sludge.

And you have not heard it.
