Coachella 11

Well I booked my flight yesterday. I love the lineup.

Looking forward to Duran Duran, The Chems, Leftfield (!!!!!!!!!), Sasha, Shpongle (word is its actually live), Sven Vath, Caifanes, DFA 1979, Big Audio Dynamite, Trentmoller, High Contrast, HEALTH, Lightning Bolt, Tame Impala. And more to discover.

Hopefully the bland headliners/big names cut down the attendance a bit.
To me it just looks like a lineup to sell as many tickets as possible. Nothing really speaks to me in a way that makes me want to invest all of the time, money and energy. Are they still doing 3-day-only passes? If they are, hope everyone will have a great time, but there's no way that you'd get me on a plane. I'm safely sitting this one out. Hopefully PJ Harvey will tour and come to the East Coast, same thing with the London Suede.
Totally agree with bearman.  Of course, it could be because I am old and boring now, but that lineup is really dull.
I think it's a fairly boring line-up this year too. I could definitely piece together fun days each day, but am not making the trip this year.

It's so sad you refer to them as "The London Suede."

Brian
Brian, let me guess, you get tickled by writing "neighbourhood" don't you
i like using colour, as in colour me badd.  yeah.  you know you loved them.
Sorry Brian, didn't want to confuse you with the lesbian Suede who sings at the Birchmere all the time. Figured you were a fan.
I am probably going due to commitments to friends and family, but I agree with others that the linup alone would not inspire me to incur the time/expense like it did last year.

Yay for Death from Above 1979!  Also excited about miss Polly Jean, Shpongle, Chemical Brothers and a bunch of other things.

yeah, i'd be excited excited about a lot of the same bands.  not quite enough to get me on a plane, but if i'm anywhere near CA for work around then…

according to leftfield's website, "the Leftfield tour will be announcing a couple of dates in the US very soon".  coachella is one, hopefully we'll get an (or several) east coast dates.

live shpongle… mmmmmm.
Personally I think the line-up is great.  Not a huge fan of the main acts on Saturday but the smaller ones are great even though I've seen most of them at least once already.  Crystal Castles, Cut Copy, Warpaint, Tame Impala, Nosaj Thing, Ariel Pink, !!!, Klaxons, The Drums, Glasser and a few other bands I haven't listened to much but would love to check out.

AC always puts on a good show and I missed Arcade Fire at Merriweather, would like to see Mumford & Sons, BSS, PvD, Gogol Bordello (12/30 show was killer), Shpongle, Elbow, Foals, The Radio Dept, and Freelance Whales

Sunday: the Strokes (haven't seen them before), Ratatat, Nas, Bloody Beetroots, Chromeo, Best Coast, Delorean and Menomena.

I mean most of the bands worth seeing have been in DC and I've seen, but half the fun of a festival is checking out new bands, seeing those you've missed when they came through or seeing your favorite bands again.  I think it would be worth going if I wasn't planning on going to Sasquatch a month later.

For those interested, JFK from DFA1979 posted on the MSTRKRFT message boards that Coachella wouldn't be a one off show. Or at least…. enough to let us believe it's not.

A poster:

but if its not a one off thing i'd hope that a certain someone would be decent enough to give us the heads up.

Response:

heads up.

Oh, yeah! Go all the way to the desert to watch tv! Why even bother? I don't care how many fancy lights, swirling confetti and glitter bursts, and pumping cloud machines of ecstasy are utilized to enhance the audio/video feed, if they aren't live on stage, it's all smoke and mirrors and nothing but a DJ set of sorts. Save it for a side party.

Jaded? Probably. I just don't get excited over such fakery anymore.

Hoping Elbow find their way to the East Coast… and I don't mean NYC. Think we've proved it over the years that Elbow always has a home here in the DC area.

eh, not surprising.  'chella doesn't claim to focus on new, undiscovered talent.  i think the repetition says more about the state of the music industry than about the festival - there are no emerging bands that can headline a major festival.  people won't go to/pay for a festival just to hear The Momma's Toasters and the recently reunited BlackWolfDeadKnifeFires.

i'd take the momma's toasters . . . over kanye.
It was either me…or the rest of the general public who are realizing what clowns these guys are.
