Didn't think much of the first album… Being able to capture a sound without writing good songs is a big snooze fest in my book, haven't bothered listening to the new one. So many better contemporary artists doing retro soul the right way. Then again I don't understand the infatuation with tUnE-YaRds

caught a glimpse of his live act in May and thought it was pedestrian stuff. Not edgy at all.

I'm ok with lyrical fluff if it's ear candy. I'll give it a listen! The first album gave me no reason to have any high expectations from the second, so that's why I've yet to give it a listen. Bet it's not as good as Raphael Saadiq's latest.

Am I allowed to mount my own feeble defense on this matter?
I have nothing against ear-candy, just prefer it in the form of pop-rock bands like Midget (who I was rockin' out today to) or dance-pop like Kylie Minogue.
Nothing against anyone who limits their neo soul/funk/r&b picks to RS or MH, I just personally prefer to dig a little deeper and have become to rely on the taste makers at Record Kicks, Freestyle, HammondBeat or Colemine records for my current soundtrack. These have become my go to labels for downloads on eMusic of late.
