She's from Lake Placid. How "rich" could she possibly be?
Something tells me a disproportionate amount of musicians, particularly of the indie flavor, probably come from privileged backgrounds.

I also don't get why people are so pissed off she's "manufactured". Who cares? 1/2 of the artists around today are, and people don't complain about them.
I think it's just because it's the first time an "indie" person came on the scene and was a rich girl. Like vampire weekend weren't a bunch of prep school richies…
But, the SNL performance was really bad.

I think this is the fundamental problem here. There's nothing "indie" about LDR…and that's not a good OR a bad thing. She's a (potential) pop star…there's nothing that separates her from Katy Perry or any other pop female vocalist. And I'm not being too cool for school here in saying that…personally, I"d rather listen to Katy Perry than Arcade Fire. And that's a fact.
But for some reason, this clamoring to find the next big thing that blogs do translates into some endearment to music fans that want to be ahead of the curve. So a poor girl like LDR first gets built up in our little indie world with some feverish devotion (BEFORE she even has a goddamn album out), and that segues into high spotlight for someone that hasn't even had to cut their teeth doing this stuff yet.
I'm with K8teebug…I feel badly for her above anything else. I mean, who among us, after being told they're going to be huge, a star, rich, powerful, etc., WOULDN'T jump at the chance at the ripe old age of 20.

At the risk of being seen as a loser, I've never had any of those things as a personal goal. ;)

Actually, just ask my daughter. She'll tell you
Daddy is Santa Claus.
If I had aspirations to be a powerful or influential anything, would I be spending work time on an internet message board?
I rest my case.

I saw the 'video games' performance on SNL and while I didn't think it was great, I didn't think it was terrible either (not a fan of her music) I mean some people are calling it the worst performance on SNL ever……obviously they haven't watched a lot of SNL
I mean….worse than ashlee simpson??? really??

Quick summary of story.
Early 20-something/late somethingteen with rich parents wants to be a pop star.
Gets record deal and is marketted as another Britney clone, market does not bite.
Lays low for a few years.
Gets made over and videos of her posing as some bedroom indie pop artist pop up on Youtube and spread like wildfire via supposed indie blogs.
As with all these internet celebrities, someone does a little digging and posts all about her failed pop princess attempt.
Shortly thereafter, news of her upcoming album's major label release surfaces.
Shortly thereafter, news of her performing on SNL surfaces.
SNL performance happens after a few live gigs that got negative to lukewarm reviews.
SNL performance is brutal.
Blogs go crazy bashing her.
This thread is started.
The end.

While she did appear to get an image do-over, I didn't get the impression she came from money - the video here seems to confirm that:

If she had had a mediocre performance on SNL would we be talking about her this week?

Good point. Bad performances may result in chatter but don't sell records, though. Her 15 minutes might be up before her album drops at this rate.

http://www.villagevoice.com/2012-01-18/music/lana-del-rey-lights-up-the-internet/Always a good read but fails to mention that the reinvented persona which has people up in arms was not of her making but instead, was the brainchild of some suit at Interscope. Bowie analogy is weak because as far as I know, all his characters were his own. With LDR, there appears to be someone/some people in the background pulling each string.
