Kickstarter Projects

Yes they are a bit controversial at the moment, but no one is forcing anyone to donate.

Here's a couple of interest that are going down to the wire.

Ramesh from Voxtrot is raising funds for a new record

don't see what problem people have with it… its a great idea and i'm glad many of my favorite bands are using it…
Think that was a reference to my comment in the other thread about how I'm tired of seeing bands using kickstarter just to pre-sell their album at significantly jacked-up prices.

Some bands do kickstarter really well, offering their fans unique/exclusive/unusual items.  Other bands really miss the point– sorry, but an autographed copy of a your album is probably not worth fifty bucks.

I'm not opposed to kickstarter in general, just disappointed in how many bands choose to use it.

definitely! it should cost the same whether autographed or not in my opinion.. i mean look at newbury comics.. they sell tons of autographed stuff at retail.. its just a nice thank you for the fans…

(and don't forget the Tower one…)

any bands that I know that have done it, their drive has ended. One I liked best - Val Emmich - he had the best value and perks per the dollar/grouping. For thank you section in his cd inlet it was a city map and everyone's name was a street. Some artists jump too high in their dollar amount per the perk, or too low in perk per the dollar amount, I agree.

the 500 dollars for the house party seems like a good deal.

here's some . . . that seem easy to slip into.
games are what kickstarter is meant for.

Some cool things in the list. I like the 3 days touring with the band and being in the chorus.  And for 10k they will play your private event.
If only I had the disposable income for most of those… Regardless, i will contribute something.  The Spree are on my top five all time favorite bands list.

Could this be the antidote to Walkie's current manopausal breakdown?
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/872104423/beautiful-noise-music-documentary
The definitive documentary about influential 80?s and 90?s guitar bands who harnessed massively loud sounds using a sea of effects pedals and delivered some of the most BEAUTIFUL NOISE ever recorded.

8 years in the making, with over 50 interviews, band members, music icons and tastemakers.

BEAUTIFUL NOISE is an in-depth exploration of a music movement in the late 20th century, a fascinating period when some innovative musicians mixed guitar noise into conventional pop song structures while maintaining a philosophy of letting the music speak for itself.

Although many of the people interviewed are notoriously press shy they have opened up about their music and experiences from over 20 years ago; how they defied the rules and became sonic innovators that have inspired so many.

Currently the documentary is in the final stages for worldwide release, and we need your help to raise the $75,000 to pay for limited run licensing and finishing costs to distribute in Film Festivals and on DVD/Blu-Ray.

This documentary will finally be released only if the fans of this music believe in this project and contribute.

INTERVIEWS INCLUDE: Kevin Shields, Jim Reid, Robin Guthrie, Bobby Gillespie, Douglas Hart, Colm O?Ciosoig, Debbie Googe, Simon Raymonde, Alan Moulder, Ivo Watts-Russell, Alan McGee, Sonic Boom
FEATURING BAND MEMBERS OF: Ride, Slowdive, Chapterhouse, Lush, Curve, Swervedriver, Medicine, Pale Saints, Seefeel, AR Kane, Telescopes, Boo Radleys, Cranes, Catherine Wheel, Flying Saucer Attack
WITH: Wayne Coyne, Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan and Robert Smith
    Score by Brad Laner (Medicine)
VFX by John Nugent (Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Matrix)
Motion Graphics by Angus Cameron (Music Video Director)
Graphic design by Timothy O'Donnell (4AD)
Featuring Tour Projections, Bootlegs and previously unseen personal videos.
Performance Videos (and some interviews) with current bands: Sigur Ros, M83, Autolux, Serena Manessh, Ulrich Schnauss, A Place To Bury Strangers, Grouper, Tim Hecker, Belong among others.

This is your chance to be a part of this definitive documentary.

WHY KICKSTARTER? Ultimately we think Kickstarter is the best place for crowdfunding artistic and indie projects like ours. It is a democratizing force that brings projects to life.  This documentary is for fans of this music and music culture.  The prohibitive licensing costs have kept us from releasing our film but with Kickstarter's unique crowdfunding structure we can make Beautiful Noise available to the people who want to see it, provided enough people make a pledge.

STATUS ? We are in post-production. The project is creatively finished; we are waiting for the go-ahead from you (the prospective viewer) to fund the massive amount of money required for necessary clearances that make a unique film like ours complete.

This is the first-ever documentary about one of the most influential music movements of the 20th century.

The true inside story of these bands in their own words, with concert and video footage, home videos, tour projections, interviews and testimonials.

This is the film fans have been waiting years for.

Maybe, one week left…
I think Jaguar first posted about Beautiful Noise here 6-7 years ago. Great to finally see it is almost done.
Possibly controversial…it's not about the artwork that is being paid for…they paid for the recording and mastering what they are looking to pay for now is distribution. They aren't with a label and this puts their new album in listeners hands and no one owns their music but them.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/toadthewetsprocket/new-studio-album-from-toad-the-wet-sprocket
Nothing wrong with the Toad campaign lots of bands use Kickstarter as a way to pre-orders of their albums with the special bundles.  I am impressed by the fact that they are making the album available digitally when it got funded, most of the time there is a lag in even getting the album digitally after the campaign ends.
They just stretched their goal to $150k. They're still doing well with pledges but, wow, that's high. Yet, they added a course of responsibility to promote, garner radio, make videos, etc. They'll have a small PR and managing staff, I'm sure, but at the minor levels. So, at this point, it's core crowd funding.
I think I get nervous when I see those high amounts (cough-Zach Braff-cough), but in Toad's regard, I know they don't have management or a label, and they can do things how they want - no label breathing down their necks, then locking up their music in ownership, or a shed. Plus, they are honest guys with a humble DIY attitude.
Thanks for the good points, Koz. As a thank you and to add to their goal stretch, they just added for everyone who pledges (no matter the amount) an acoustic version album (in digital format).
The new songs sound okay - a little glossy, and I miss their lighter side of grunge sound, but it's a new day and in the end, I'm just happy for them. I'm thinking beyond the current album - Kickstarter has the potential to provide them with the foundation for a longer return to music as a cohesive band (with all original members!)  to make future albums, tour more often, etc.
what an interesting world the music industry is.  first the industry rips off the consumer, then the consumer rips off and ruins the industry . . . and now the consumer is paying the bill so the industry can stay around.

priceless.
