how early to iota for a show?

bloody hell, i'll have to go there right after work. i actually called iota at 1pm this afternoon to make a dinner reservation so i could bide my time in the restuarant and then hop over for the show since they give the restaurant patrons first dibs (or so they say) and they had NO reservations open for tommorow, for anytime.

maybe i'll just pass and wait for them to swing back in town and play the black cat. or hope for it to be really f'n cold and all you pussy weather people stay home and that guarantees me a spot at the show! :)
well it doesn't surprise me………you should go check out exit clov at staccato instead……

you're welcome redsock………. ;)
I'll be honest, I had no idea who Gram Parsons was until about a year ago. Does the Post think most Washingtonians are aware of him? I sincerely doubt they are.

The Thrills
Irish lads form band, go to California and dream dreams of Beach Boys and Gram Parsons. See what they've come up with, at Iota Friday. But arrive very early if you plan to get in. This show will sell out for sure.
To me, Gram Parsons is like the Velvet Underground of the alt-country world. Highly revered by those that followed, yet never achieving mainstream success during his career. Incredibly important, though maybe a tad overrated.

Yeah, but I think lot of people "get" who Gram Parsons is enough to understand the reference in terms of another band. I couldn't tell ya a Gram Parsons song, but I know what his 'deal' is.
Agreed.

The article in the Post today says the album sales in Europe is pushing a million, while here in the US it has yet to sell even 20,000 units.

Guess that proves that Europeans go for mediocrity while Americans are too busy buying (Clay Aikens) crap?

hope you're feeling better lily - a friend of mine went - he liked it (unlike me he likes the CD) - he said it was packed and they are clearly getting a huge push over here in the states - right down to some manager type doing the whole "Ladies and Gentlemen, from Dublin, Ireland, THE THRILLS!!!!" - he was also amused at the fact that they had three roadies for a gig at Iota

theres a review in the Post today where they are called a novelty-tinged nostalgia act
3 roadies? gesh, even most bands at the black cat don't come with 3 roadies! well, i'm sure they'll be at the black cat by early spring so i'll check them out then.
Well I went, for what it's worth. I was pretty much on the fence with them - I have the album but didn't really know what to think of it. The show didn't convert me. They were good at whatever it was they were trying to do, but I'm not sure what that was.

I personally think their slower tracks are weak, so I didn't really enjoy those (I just don't like how they're constructed - if that makes any sense). And for the faster tunes they turned into some sort of e-street band (and more than one person I know had this thought independently) knockoff. Plus one person I was with couldn't get over the fact that the lead really DOES sound sort of like Rod Stewart.

Still, they obviously had charisma. I think what it comes down to was that if you like this sort of thing, then this is the sort of thing you'd like.
