As for Television I think they are the most over-rated band of all time.  Case of all the press being in NYC so they overrate the bands fro NYC.

they really are… i mean arguably one great album side (the first one on the first lp)..

I'd actually agree on their output, but side one of Marquee moon is so great.  And they get so many bonus points for impact and style in my book.

Funny thing about a band like Television…they don't sound so revolutionary now because people copied them and probably did a better job expanding on what they started doing. But for the time they came out, their music was so different and like a breath of fresh air. Amazing guitar playing. If you've heard "Marquee Moon" on a rainy Saturday at 3am, it's perfect music. It has its place, but it's not something you need to hear all the time.
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
Menahan Street Band
Ikebe Shakedown
Television
Kid Creole and the Coconuts
Talking Heads
Y'all have mentioned most of the "classic" NYC bands and artists. Here's a few that merit mention.

KISS
Magnetic Fields
Silos
Fleshtones
Steely Dan
Dirty Projectors
Pete Seeger
Anthrax
Public Enemy
Liars
Helmet
Blonde Redhead

To me the Velvets belong entirely on their own list, just as the Stooges do too. And really the Ramones as well. Some bands just don't contribute to the musical landscape; they invent an entirely new language.

huh? they are new york bands who could arguably only have come from new york. … that is what the poster was asking…

I would add New York Dolls to my list… very NYC…
No love for LCD Soundsystem?
WU TANG!

I guess I really don't know who comes from NYC.  Magnetic Fields would be my number 1 and Pete Seeger should be on lists as well.  I will have to do a new one.
Blondie
Cyndi Lauper
Richard Hell
Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers
My new list with update information about who is from NYC

1. Magnetic Fields
2. Billy Joel
3. Madonna
4. FranK Sinatra
5. Run DMC
6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
7. The National
8. Beastie Boys
9. Sonic Youth
10. Vivivan GIrls
11. Pete Seeger

Rhett wants to be in a New York State of Mind for his drive up to the big apple and wanted suggestions on essential NY acts for the soundtrack to accompany is trip.  I think?
Yeah, that's basically it.

Of course my selection is limited to the 10,000 or so songs I have on my ipod.

Just select Frank Sinatra and Neil Diamond and alternate.

Cop Shoot Cop.  Celeste will love it.

Carole King is from NYC?  Well that solves it.  Put "Tapestry" on repeat and enjoy your ride.
If by "love" it you mean she will insist that I turn the car around and drive straight home, you are correct.

Neil Diamond and Frank Sinatra would be likely to evoke similiar responses. Though I actually did play Neil Diamond on a beach trip a couple years ago, and actually managed to hear a few songs over the top of her bitching about how much it sucked.

Frank Sinatra and Neil Diamond are nowhere comparable.

Bitching about Neil Diamond I could see but Sinatra? … Those 50s Capitol records were cut by the creme de la creme of jazz musicians, feature the best of the American Songbook, and were arranged by the very best (Riddle, May, etc.)…

Hopefully you're just selling your wife short… I can't imagine many women listening to Frank Sinatra and complaining. Of course if all you know of Frank is New York New York because you heard it after a baseball game..well, that would explain your ignorance.

I mean who the fuck doesn't like the Sinatra-Jobim record or Swingin' Lovers?
