d.c. record fair

any one make it today?
free sunday parking on 7th about a block away was a good start.
penn social was a good venue (if you're into big dance clubs)
picked up:
miles - on the corner w/gatefold cover
miles - and horns (prestige reissue)
mulligan/baker - carnegie hall volume 2 (love the glossy cti jackets)
terje rypdal - what comes after ('73 ecm)
many familiar vendors (crooked, som, cellar) and others, not crazy crowded
I love vinyl, but i'll never spend $100 on my favorite lee morgan lp (search for the new land)

i was sorry to miss it..sort of forgot about with the family and all… paying 100 for the lee morgan is crazy..it is very good but its a strange one as its not even a blue note really.it was released after blue note was sold to liberty..doesn't have "van gelder" in runout … it was released retroactively in the catalog order if that makes sense..so i always think it should cost less … i do have a copy i paid about $75 for many years ago before I knew the lowdown..it is a good one….

crazy busy..

prices on the up and up… lack of light doesn't help that much…I just couldn't spend that much money on a record without being able to really look at it..records can be messed up so easily

I spent about half what I usually spend…but glad to see so many people out. maybe i'll post a picture of my pickups later if i motivate… honestly I didn't get anything I'm absolutely floored by but some cool stuff and filled a few holes in the collection

Forgot (again).  Wish I hadn't.

$20 parking, coffee cold, super crowded and very dark, but still managed to have a good time and find some nice stuff:

miles - we want miles & star people
devo - are we not men? & hardcore vol. 1
steely dan - can't buy a thrill o.p. on abc dunhill w/gatefold
evens 1st (my most expensive purchase @ $10)

spotted a Hendrix electric ladyland for $75, a mono miles 'round midnight for $88 and overheard someone trying on unload a beatles butcherblock for 4g's if anyone was interested.
some fun conversations and kid congo powers' dj set was the highlight of the afternoon.
and, could not get to the skee-ball machines. 

My buddy had a table there wonder if he cleaned up. He had nothing over $15 he said. I was in the northern neck all weekend and missed it.

i picked up the following:

burning spear - Marcus Garvey (US island not mango original in shrink/unplayed)
mott the hoople- wildlife (playing right now)
mongo santamaria - up from the roots (promo sticker)
stan getz - captain marvel (glad to add this one to my collection)
dexter gordon- blues a la suisse
gene ammons- preachin'
jim kweskin jug band- garden of joy
silvio rodriguez - mujeres (mex issue.. not sure what i was thinking; spaced out that i have the original cuban)
pete seeger- traditional christmas carols (noticed at home that is electronically rechanneled for stereo.hate that)
family- a song for me (white label promo on reprise..)
elvis- how great thou art (late 70s issue)
chico hamilton quintet-  a different journey (reprise white label promo)
crazy horse- (original crazy horse lp on reprise… i needed this one)
david bowie - scary monters (unbelievably somehow i went missing this one but this copy will be holdover as its not in perfect shape… i noticed teenage wildlife has some issues.. not sure a cleaning will help)
chris connor- her first atlantic lp , 1228 , but in the original stereo issue…looks mint..the kicker i had not realized she signed it in the back (and dedicated to somebody with a nice note)…


honestly i have trouble buying records like that..its too dark and too many people jostling… couldn't even get at the tables… competitive shopping is not my thing.. .. as always nice to see some of the local vinyl sellers… always a pleasure to see bobby who used to own smash on M street..

nice finds with the spear, mott, getz, dexter and connor (I have a copy of sam cooke's 1st keen lp with a similar inscription).
as far as the 'competitive shopping', i'm totally with you on that one - I much prefer the yard/garage/estate sale scene - much more laid back, cheaper and negotiable.

Have any of you been up to Trax on Wax in Catonsville?  Highly recommend.

I didn't make it again this year. Instead, I went sledding with my kid and ended up hurting my back. Middle age sucks.

wow, talk about an unbelievable find..

much as I like Chris Connor, I think Sam Cooke, on some days, is my favorite singer.

I find autographed records all the time. most people don't know, care or remember the signatures. I have a James brown one, Tony Bennet, all of the Ramones, Xaviera Hollander and probably more. Always fun randomly finding those at random places.

Overpriced, especially on the new stuff. Selection is impressive but it's a pain to get to for me so I'm unlikely to go back.

I don't see them as being overpriced.  If you consider they have albums other places don't have and in good condition.  I don't buy new stuff from them as Soundgarden has a bigger selection but if you want a used album that is long out of print they are bound to have it. You get what you pay for.

Fair enough. They have some good stuff for sure.

And the guy who owns it is really nice and will play anything for you.  I like it there.  I do agree about Soundgarden having better prices for the brand new stuff.
