Throw out some ideas for my last bunch of monthly emusic tracks.
eMusic home stretch
The new Joanna Newsom is out today…not necessarily my cup of tea, but the album only has 5 tracks. Pretty good use of 5 downloads to get a new full-length album.
the new mouse on mars
indie: beach house
jazz: omer avital / the ancient art of giving

dead milkmen
dirty on purpose - 'hallelujah sirens'
The one thing about eMusic these days is there is no lack of albums to download, I have several lists going and keep adding more each week.
local: The Hard Tomorrows
indie: The Music Lovers
power pop: The Sails
and of course the Chumbawuba which is very good.
Plus a ton of early UK punk reissued via Cherry Red and it's imprints.

Is it safe to say eMusic has the vast majority of new releases each week?
while eMusic is now making available new releases when they come out, their selection is still limited to indie labels like Merge, Epiteth, V2 Music, Drag City, Matador…
The amount of indie UK singles being made available is mind boggling.

yeah i got it… it's growing on me at the moment wasn't the instant oh yeah i thought it would be.
and i forgot that Dischord, Arts and Crafts, XL, 4AD, and Secretly Canadian add new stuff quickly as well. eMusic has partner with several of the indie label digital distributors like IODA, CDBaby, and PIAS in the UK. Subpop is a notable holdout..
and if you act quickly a couple UK labels as they may soon be unavailable to the US are there.
Warp
Domino

I've enjoyed your critques of bands here, and I think I know your tastes a bit. If it's available, I'd highly recommend Driveblind's new cd - released about two weeks ago. Power pop/great vocals. Played both Black Cat and 930 club this year and are just as good live as in the studio. One of my top five picks out of 65 bands I heard at SXSW this year.

Labels come and go on emusic without notice. Rykodisc, for example. The Frank Zappa albums (30+) disappeared without notice a couple months ago. I'm really surprised that Warp is there now…it could be a mistake?? At any rate, download them quick, hehehe.
Oh, Domino used to have a lot of albums available for UK subscribers…and they quickly disappeared too…but it looks like there are some albums on Domino that just got available for US subscribers…

eMusic has had for several years albums which could only be downloaded in the US due to restriction placed by who owned the publishing rights. a couple months ago the service was divided into a US vs European site and a number of albums were available in the UK at that point. However, errors have been known to occur allowing downloading regardless of location, which could have happened in the case of WARP and Domino. The WARP stuff was released in the US via Matador so it's possible that why it's available for download now.
I think the Rykodisc stuff will be available again at some point. Ryko was bought out by a major which lead to speculation it's catalog would disappear and it did. But, the reason given was that Ryko was in the process of changing it's electronic distribution, so it would be back.
Contracts with labels expire and not renewed, but Victory Records went away and returned.

And its always enjoyable to read folks from outside the US bitching about this in the album review section…

The new Aimee Mann holiday cd is also out and the new Evens is really good as well. For anyone interested in joining emusic, the quantity that you get per month is going to drop on the 21st so sign up before that.
