I imagine it's simply a safety issue. A beer-soaked, sloped floor in an over-crowded bar could cause lots of problems.

Drink enough and the floor becomes sloped anyway.

He was totally winging it by then:

* Had to restart a few times,
* He was giving the band clues to guess the next song - "How's this for a clue? ch, ch, ch?",
* He introduced Life on Mars with "we haven't played this one forever - take it for what its worth".

AWESOME segment.

I think something weirdly wonderful sometimes happens to bands when they come to Pittsburgh. It's no DC or NY - very little pressure. Musicians seem to pick up on that and often deliver stunningly relaxed performances.
