i'm guessing this is the reason the board went AWOL earlier today… got it back up by reverting to plain ol' HTTP?

It's probably safe, of course, but anybody who hasn't allowed an exception for this site gets a big ugly warning page. That scares people off and they might reasonably assume that the site has been hacked.

Cert has been updated
It was safe the whole time (likely) but most browsers go a little hyperbolic when the cert expires (rightfully so, as it is surely a way people have been scammed in the past and you lose encryption)

I had a pitchfork ready, but the admin had been dead for about a decade and Koz barely knows how to ctrl-alt-delete
Someone else is responsible for cert renewal clearly, this happens in January every few years

It appears that the site's SSL certificate has expired, as indicated by the details you've provided. The certificate, issued by DigiCert, Inc., expired on January 8, 2024. This expiration might indeed be the cause of the site's temporary disruption earlier today.
Reverting to plain HTTP might be a temporary workaround to restore functionality, but keep in mind that it compromises the security of data transmitted between users and the site.
The comment reflects a mix of technical concern and a touch of humor, playfully suggesting that the NSA might now have access to the user's top 10 albums of the year due to the temporary lapse in secure communication.
In resolving the issue, renewing or obtaining a new SSL certificate and ensuring secure HTTPS communication would be the recommended course of action to maintain both functionality and user data security. You can check

Whoa… the man behind the curtain steps out
Hey Steve come on in the pool and enjoy
We talk a big game, but most of us are softies who would take a (nerf) bullet for the others
There is an awful lot of ribing, but some smart and interesting folks here
Edit: I read this as Steve being an IMP sys admin…not sure if I made the correct identification

if stevediaz isn't a bot, he sure writes like one.
the IM system we have at work has a built-in chatbot that writes the same type of summaries, they read exactly like stevediaz's post above.

Steve Diaz is a strong contender for Rookie of the Year awards. He's coming out of the gate strong.

"This collection of message describes whole numbers, in sequence, starting from zero. A late development in the conversation was the substitution of numbers for items that are in some way reflective or related to the number. Although devoid of actual content, a few regular users of the communication space appears determined to raise its perceived value, with meddling success".
