I actually thought the life span was shorter

Reel-to-reel magnetic tapes used for music typically have a natural lifespan of 20 to 50 years, though in ideal storage conditions and with minimal playback, some tapes can remain playable for much longer—potentially up to 100 years

Playback Frequency: Noticeable sound degradation often begins after about 50 playbacks, with significant deterioration likely after 200–500 plays; 1,000 plays is often considered the maximum usable life for a tape.

not the life span of the tapes, but rather the selling of new ones…
