How did you end up here?

I think there are other options to Bush, Saddam, or Osama. It's a sad day when there's not.

I actually signed on a couple years ago under a different name. I think I wanted to ask a question about some upcoming show - I forget. I came back several months later, looking for info and opinions on local bands. I ended up also learning about lots of national/international bands I never would have heard of otherwise. You can read all the magazines you want, but nothing beats an honest review from a regular music fan.

My concert attendance has gone up dramatically since coming here. I used to think I went to a lot of shows - usually around 15-20/year. In the last 12 months I've been to almost 50.

It's just fun being around people that are fellow music freaks, whether you always agree with them or not.
So what is the usual description of a 9:30 boarder, and why don't I fit it?

Personally, I wanted to see if anyone had anything interesting to say after the disasterous Murder City Devils set here a few years ago. Sure enough, they did, and I was hooked. How about the rest of you?
same as many of the others - came for the music - I actually registered ages ago and never read ot posted, then started reading around the time of the 'big' blow up and was scared to post and finally started posting late last year

politics and bitching aside the board is great - I have met some nice people and listened to a ton of new music I would never have listened to and see some great bands I would never have seen
I ended here while looking for upcoming shows. I think it was right after a site redesign that made the Forum more apparent.
I actually meant it in all positive terms. It just seems that most folks here fall into one of two categories; the Brit-Pop folks and the Indie Rock folks. Obviously it's a sliding scale and doesn't necessarily mean that you only listen to that type of music, but it's pretty clear cut.

It doesn't necessarily mean we all like the same music, but for the most part, it wouldn't be too hard on this board to name a band and easily guess who likes or does not like them. Please, before anyone feels the need to defend themselves, I'm speaking in super generic terms here. No need to point out all the various sub-sub-sub genres that you all love.

But some of you (Mankie, Rhett, and Dupek, for example), don't fall into those easily-definable categories. Personally, even though it can be frustrating watching you post yet another cynical rant against bands just to get a rise, for the most part, it's rather refreshing.

And that is one of my personal favorite parts of this board; hearing new opinions, especially on music. Kind what makes all of the posts about sports, politics and ticket service charges worht it ;)

I was a Brit pop fan in the 80's, and have liked certain indie stuff dating back that far as well. I still lidten to both of those genres (not that you can really lump things together like that), but probably am more picky in nature than back in the 80's and 90's. So liking those genres predated my current love of Americana, of which I tend to be picky too.
i was really stressed about a second built to spill show a few months back
Probably showed up for info on a show I was going to at the club, but I can't really remember.

I stayed for the drama. And to avoid doing actual work while I'm at work.

I'm looking for a new job so my internet wanking time will probably be signifigantly decreased soon. I've got a 2nd interview with a company today. Wish me luck!
Yeah, I didn't want it to seem like I was generalizing too much, but it's hard to put into words, mostly because it is impossible to lump genres together. It just seems to me that you three don't fit the typical demographic around here, which is a plus in my book.

I never would've thought of listening to anything labeled country had you not gone on about some of the bands you liked. Now, I'm kicking myself for not giving some of this a try in the past. I can't think specifically of anything that Dupek or Mankie discussed that turned me onto new music, but I definitely love hearing their opinions on the topics, and seeing what they're listening to that I've never heard before.

It's nice and easy to discuss a band we all like, but I'd hate to fall into the trap of being so elitist about music. The fact that some of you bring a different opinion to the table is pretty great.

i got here for much the same reason as ggw's. . .there was a link on the web page all of a sudden, i came to visit and i haven't left.
hmm… i lurked quite a bit, started posting when the Belle and Sebastian fiasco went down (one show… no, two! no, one!) mostly i came here and stayed when the craigslist R&R got so out-of-hand stoopid that it made my head hurt.
not so much a "how did you end up here" but more of a "where have markie and lulu gone"??

severe carpal tunnel syndrome sets in after 10,000 posts?? (watch out Rhett!!)

impending biotech IPO millionairedom so they're trying to distance themselves from the filthy masses??
I had heard from staph that there were some people venting about the sound at a couple shows that I was working and had to explain why they couldn't hear and why the club was not responsible (one IIRC was a show where all the gear was the band's so the club just provided a structure to put it all in).

Stayed for the music.

me too. signed up again last fall.
I was hoping to hook up with some young indie-chick and woo her knickers off with my mancunian accent, but soon realized it doesn't come over too well via a keyboard!

Seriously, I really am a huge music fan so signed up for that reason….I initially registered to respond to a comment someone made about a show, I was defending the artist.

I don't care too much for most of the bands that are talked about on here which is why I rarely get involved in those discussions….I do take mental notes on them and go check them out at B&N where you can listen to a snippet of each track, but very few have impressed me.

At this point, the board has just become a nasty habit I can't kick.
