In keeping with the tradition of past shameless plugs on this here board…
The sheer entertainment/educational value of this Friday evening's "We Fought the Big One" post-punk dj night at the Marx Cafe borders on the ridiculous. And that's a good thing!
My dj partner Brandon and I are chuffed to bits to be welcoming DIY archivist & hyped2death label founder/owner Chuck Warner behind the turntable booth! Calling Westminster, Mass., his home these days, Chuck might be the world's foremost expert on DIY and U.K. post-punk. For years, Chuck's famed hyped2death label has released on cd for the first time a mindboggling assortment of bands, drawing on a huge range of obscure vinyl releases and cassettes from "back in the day." Chuck is someone whose passion and knowledge for this music is simply unparralled—he has worked slavishly to ensure his hyped2death releases offer the highest possible sound quality and the most thorough of liner notes. His releases have drawn critical acclaim from The Wire (Byron Coley is a huge fan), Bob Stanley (yup, the St. Etienne dude) at The Guardian, Uncut magazine, Spin, Record Collector, the list goes on and on…
We highly encourage you to visit Chuck's website, where you can read more about his label and releases: http://www.hyped2death.com/
Chuck will also be bringing a limited number of hyped2death releases with him this Friday. If you're lucky, you might be able to snap one up! Stop by the dj booth, say hello to the man and inquire within—trust us, you'll be glad you did!
And as always, the Marx Cafe will be offering a tasty selection of libations to whet your summer whistle. We're convinced that Chimay and DIY post-punk is going to replace "popcorn and coke" as the next, must-have combo anyday now. ;)
Right then, hope to see you Friday evening!
