8-24-06 Opening Night at the Rock and Roll Hotel

Well, color me excited. Almost on a lark last night BigYawn hit the â??softâ? opening of the newest DC venue, the Rock and Roll Hotel. We were both surprised and impressed with the venue and all its amenities. And we were shocked to see quite the scene that came out to support the venue.
While 400 people might be a bit of an over estimate, the main floor of the Hotel, where the stage is located, can easily hold 200 plus. I took some pictures on my cell camera but canâ??t figure out a way to get them on my computer. Damn technology. Upstairs had one large room and a number of smaller rooms with differet concepts behind them. I was not expecting any of the rooms to be quite as large as they were. The main , and largest room, has a long bar and pool table, and also had an off-shoot room which looked like it may be a dining area of sorts. At the opposite end of the main room lies a number of smaller rooms with tons of seating in them, as well as what we imagined to be the practice rooms and recording studio weâ??ve heard so much about. With the large jukebox and ample seating, it is the upstairs that really stood out as a very cool place to hang out.

Apparently the Hotel used to be a funeral home. Hope that doesnâ??t scare anyone away, but it does explain the creepy upstairs bathroom tiled floor. The crowd on this soft opening was the biggest surprise. In the DC music community you can sometimes expect apathy, but not tonight. Members of Middle Distance Runner, the Alphabetical Order, Greenland, the Echoes, and Justin Jonesâ?? backing band were there. As was Laura Burhen, DJ Ca$$idy, DJ Victory Rose and any number of people used to spinning in DC on a regular basis. Black Cat owner Dante Ferrando was also on hand, as were a number of promoters and various other scenesters, including much of the DAM! Fest planning group. It was a veritable cornacopia of whoâ??s who in the DC music scene. Imagine that, an event where everyone comes out to support the local scene?

We have high hopes for the Rock and Roll Hotel, and we feel it can certainly become the third jewel on the citiesâ?? crown of venues along with the Black Cat and the 9:30 Club. And the great upstairs space assures us that there will always be a cool place to hang out on the redeveloping H St. The real question is, if you build a great venue and room to hang out in on H St., will the people actually come? This question was heard being bantered about quite a bit last night. I guess we wonâ??t really know for sure till the shows start coming. Whatâ??s on tap so far? Locals Wooly Mammoth, Shortstack and Head Roc will be joined by touring bands like the Whips and the Presets on the initial schedule, and all eyes are on what sort of line-up the DAM! Festival will put together in late October.

I could have done without this paragraph to let me know about the venue itself. I know it's a great venue with a ton of potential and a bunch of good people involved in making it what it is and will be.

The only one really worth mentioning in all this scenester pile of poop would be Dante. No one gives a fuck about any of the rest. LOL Are those names something that will influence me from going to check out the club…hardly. So depressing they mention a solo artist's backing band being there…

by the way, freako, you do not need to pay to go upstairs to drink at the hotel. you just need a valid ID.

Uh hello, of course most of it was serious, my whole point was to write about the night and the venue. But…

…was meant to be sarcasm on my part. A couple layers actually, refrencing both who was and wasn't there. Granted, 3 in the morning "I've had too much to drink" sarcasm, but sarcasm nonetheless. Sorry if it doesn't pass the GGW test. It clearly didn't pass the MindCage test either. And well, I'm not sure I feel comfortable taking the Dupek test.

Yeah because sarcasm translates so well over the interweb and I was the only one who missed right? Clearly not the case. At least I'm not getting all defensive when someone comments on something I did to come up with some immature statement. Was that at a drunken 3am post too? If I had a large cement block up my ass, I'd look rather funny walking around seeing that I don't have much of an ass at all.

And for the record, I wasn't able to attend the opening so the statement made about me not being mentioned is null. Plus, I couldn't compete with "members of Justin Jones' backing band" in the hip department anyway for Redsock to notice. ;)

some are and some aren't. i believe they can be at the band's/booker's request.

i went to see justin jones play last night, and i had a great time. i was very impressed with the place. if i ever went out, i would go there. i highly recommend checking it out if you have the chance.

It seems like a cool place to hang out and have e few drinks, especially in the upstairs area. The bartenders were pleasant and the prices seems comparable to 9:30, maybe a little less expensive.

Parking could be an issue on busy nights. The neighborhood could be a little sketchy if you're alone and I'm not really sure where the closest Metro stop is.

The sound was not good at all. I mean it was really poor. If they're going to compete for shows with the likes of Black Cat they need to invest some money in a real sound system.

Check out their website if your curious. It doesn't look finished and has pictures of famous bands that haven't played there. I find that odd, but maybe it's just me.

The Briefs are playing there 11/1…that should be a fun show.
