Artists that people should be appreciating more

There are tons that I could name but I'll limit it to one.

Trespassers William

This is along the lines of Bearman's Elliott Smith post, of which I agree. Those who know them, love them, especially Anna Lynne Williams. Others seem to not even know they exist. Anna Lynne has probably the cleanest and most beautiful voice in modern Rock (in its broadest sense). Any kind of doctoring in the studio or effects only harm those gorgeous vocals. She sounds just as perfect live as recorded. On top of that, the whole band do their part to enhance the music as a whole. They aren't just her backup band.

For the newbies, check out their second album called Different Stars. Very accessible to the masses and just plain good listening.

David Bazan.
*sigh*
he makes utterly depressing music for utterly depressed people. its pretty in a 'going to go home and slit my wrists kind of way.'
I dunno. Have you heard "How I Remember?" It's a pretty rocking, kick-ass song.
He's a great story teller. I think Pedro The Lion was better as a whole than Bazan solo, but both are favorites of mine.
Richard Thompson

He has a decent following, but it doesn't make any sense to me that he isn't worshipped as a songwriter in the same league as Dylan/Neil/Springsteen, or worshipped as a guitarist in the same league as Clapton. Maybe he just isn't as digestible for the masses as they are.
Kathleen Edwards
The Frames / The Swell Season.
Alejandro Escovedo
Don Dixon and Marti Jones
Jolie Holland. People either love her or hate her, but I absolutely worship her and want to make everyone at least give her a chance. Can't stop listening to the new song on her myspace.

I'm even growing my hair out and trying to dye it like hers. (TOTAL FAN GIRL.)
she's definitely great…seen her a couple times in the bay area…looks like she moved to NYC..

she's still big in the Bay Area (she has a gig in October at Bimbos)…

Are you going to grow out your armpit hair like her too?

I concur with this choice. Liked her since the release of Escondida in 2004ish.

Beachwood Sparks
Sparklehorse

Can't make it a spark trifecta though, I've never liked Sparks. The singers vocal style annoys me.
Weezy
Joel RL Phelps
Lisa Germano
Don Lennon
Ballboy

Which is heartbreaking, as I'm now considering moving to SF in the Spring. Totally missed ever seeing her live, crossing fingers for multiple accessible tour dates in support of her new album this Fall…one show won't be enough.

I don't shave my armpits until absolutely necessary as a rule. I'm half hippie.

Escondida is one of my favourite albums of all time…absolute perfection, I listen to it at least once a week, usually every other day.

The fact that the Bishops show in June was on the BC backstage and didn't sell out while the Toadies filled the mainstage on the same night is just sad.
