so i'm watching the Nats get introduced on the field during all the Opening Day pageantry, and the on-field announcer (MASN's own Bob Carpenter) being piped into the stadium's PA actually kicks the whole thing off by saying:
"we don't want you to believe what the so-called baseball experts are saying, we think we have a pretty good baseball team this year! let's meet 'em!"
can you fucking believe that?!?! what a way to start your season!!!

Unfortunately, we don't need experts to tell us that the Nationals are going to struggle to have less than 100 losses this year. Oh well, there's always next year.

of course we're going to be horrible, but don't bring it up and shove it in everyone's face as you start to introduce the team to the home crowd for the first time!

Yeah - that's definitely pretty F*ed up. Well, you can always take the optimistic tact and think that no one expect Detroit to even make the playoffs last year, let alone WS. That would be a SERIOUS glass half-full person though.

detroit had been assembling pieces of the puzzle for years … the nats have seriously cleaned the cupboard, and our salary is on par with the devil rays … two completely different situations

thank you for giving me yet another reason to hate him … it'll be a long summer listening to ole bob
he had a funny moment today where he didn't realize he was live …. he was bitching about something saying "even if we were down twenty-to-nothing we wouldn't pull this crap…" and then the producer (probably a devry drop-out or a high-school junior) mercifully cut him off

yeah that was a lame thing to say . . . but that's the magic of opening day. anything is possible. maybe thses so-called experts really are wrong. maybe this isn't the worst pitching staff ever assembled on the major league level. maybe these cast-offs will live up to the potential they once showed before every other team in baseball decided they weren't any good. maybe this rag-tag group of rapscallions comes together and overachieves. I mean, no one thought the 69 mets, or the bad news bears or even the Estevez-led Mighty Ducks were going to do anything either.

I went to the Mets/Cards game in St. Louis for Opening Day and then made it back to DC to catch the Nats/Marlins game yesterday.
It was great to see the juxtaposition between the home opener of the defending world series champion and the home opener of the worst team in baseball. In St. Louis standing room only tickets were going for $100; in DC you could walk right in for $9.
The Nats won't be competitive for at least four years. I don't think the transient folks in DC have that kind of patience. By the second month in the new ballpark there will be plenty of empty seats.

nice comeback today. i dont' think i'll be making many nats games. i went to one last year on my birthday and had a great time, but i don't like the seating/prices/layout of this stadium. i'll travel more and see games elsewhere and just check out the new stadium next year (for the record, i don't live in dc. if i did live in dc, i'd go to a good number of games, but when it involves ~2 hours of driving each way, it's hard for me to justify it a lot).

Here's a trivia question guaranteed to win you a few coins. That is, if you know anybody willing to answer a trivia question about the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Who is the second-highest-paid player by the Pirates this season?
