This group is the hardest to shut up, but I have come up with a few sentences, that when said at the right time, will get you a return of 1. dead silence and 2. a look of total confusion as they try to think of further justification for their narrow mindset:
Tell them that if people didn't eat cows, pigs and chickens, that they would have become extinct by now. They might argue they would rather never exist than exist just to be eaten by humans. Ask them how they know cows and pigs would feel the same way. Tell them that because they are vegan that some cows and pigs and chickens don't ever get to exist, and how sad that is.
Last time I was in the company of a vegan– less than a week ago– I asked her if she was concerned that the ice water she was drinking might have been "run through the horse a few times". She replied that, while she may be a vegan, she was no extremist.
Extremism in the pursuit of vegetarianism is no virtue; a moderate in the pursuit of vegetarianism is no vegan.
