Rock Hall of Fame Nominees

Cat Stevens Nominated for Rock Hall

It had to happen eventually. Cat Stevens â?? now known as Yusuf Islam â?? has been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

My sources tell me he's a shoo-in, too.

Stevens had several huge-selling popular records in the 1970s, until he became a Muslim and changed his name. Those hits were "Moon Shadow," "Peace Train," "Oh Very Young," a cover version of Sam Cooke's "Another Saturday Night," "Father and Son" and "Wild World."

A decade or more ago, Stevens was roundly denounced for seeming to back the fatwa, or death sentence, placed by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini on the head of writer Salman Rushdie for his novel "The Satanic Verses."

Last year he was refused entry into the United States on suspicion â?? ridiculous as it was â?? that he was a terrorist of some sort.

Nevertheless, Islam does run a school in London's Islington neighborhood that is closely watched by authorities.

Stevens is not the only slam-dunk on the Rock Hall list.

For reasons that elude me, jazz legend Miles Davis is also there. So are the Dave Clark Five, John Mellencamp, Blondie, the Sir Douglas Quintet, the J. Geils Band, the Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, Grandmaster Flash, the Stooges and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

In other words, one woman (Smith) and no R&B stars. I guess we exhausted the latter category in the last couple of years with the Dells, the O'Jays and Percy Sledge.

But the list of omissions continues to be a problem. Where are Linda Ronstadt and Carly Simon? The Moody Blues? Todd Rundgren? Billy Preston ?

And if Davis â?? a weird choice if ever there was one â?? is indeed selected from the above group, then posthumous entries wouldn't seem to be a problem.

In that case, Motown's Mary Wells â?? who had hits like "My Guy," "Don't Mess With Bill" and "Beaten to the Punch" â?? should have been in already.

friedman needs to listen to miles davis' a tribute to jack johnson and then tell me he doesn't deserve to be in the r&r hall of fame
The Stooges best get elected in…and perform…
and go on tour because I must see them all together live!!!

Well if Miles gets in, then the same arguments are going to be made about Mingus, Coltrane and then Ornette Colemen. Sure there are rock elements in some of Miles' discs, but is Queen going to be inducted into the Opera Hall of Fame?

Miles is in the very top tiers of jazz history.
i think Davis gets in for Bitches Brew as well as the aforementioned record. Fusion was pretty important.

I'm sure if he doesn't get in, it will be because he's black…….and everyone will blame George Bush. I can just hear it now.

Just were does "rock" come into anything old Cat Bin Laden has done, apart from the rocks he throws at his female associates should they wear anything that reveals their ankles.

No, unlike disaster relief, President Bush doesn't control the RNR HoF.
So if Cat Stevens gets in, will he be allowed into the country to attend his own ceremony?

I'm sure he'll just register for flight school, tick the box that says "Landing training not required" and he'll be let in no bother.

The funniest Cat Stevens thing I have is that the moderators for the Robbie Fulks board also maintain one and only one other internet chat board…that being the board for Cat Stevens.

That's all I got on the Cat.
Do you think Messr. Stevens has any leads on the syph?
Sabbath, Pistols inducted into Rock Hall
Miles Davis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blondie also make cut

Monday, November 28, 2005; Posted: 10:25 a.m. EST (15:25 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) – Black Sabbath, Miles Davis and the Sex Pistols are among five musical legends to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation will hold its induction ceremony March 13 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, the organization announced Monday.

Also to be inducted into the class of 2006: 1980s New Wave band Blondie and Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, who founded A&M records in 1962, will receive a lifetime achievement award in the non-performer category.

Inductees into the side-men category will be announced at a later date.

Musicians, industry professionals and journalists vote on the nominations. Artists are eligible to be inducted into the Rock Hall after at least 25 years have passed since their first record was released.
