i have it here at work…used it once (ie not too familiar with it).
i guess the obvious advantage is being able to "talk on the phone" with people outside the u.s. for free.
other than that, i don't see anything special about it that you can't do with a phone or aol instant messenger.

My situation is one where I will be calling out of the country… a lot. My main concern with skype is sound quality. Free is nice, but a choppy/grainy conversation isn't.

I used to call Hungary (landline) from SF (1.5 MB DSL) and it sounded no better or no worse than if I called from my landline. But it was much cheaper….
You must get a headset though. Speakers with a mic will provide an echo on the other end.
