It's a lossless compression format (much like .shn) that is commonly used in the live bootleg world. Shrinks files to approximately 42% of the size of a .wav or CDA file, has builtin error checking (unlike .shn).

Yes, but you can decompress a flac to a .wav file that is an exact digital original of the original file. For people who don't want sound quality loss (bootleggers and audiophiles), the use of an mp3 simply won't work, and as big as a flac might be, it's only 42% of the size of the alternative.
Obviously for a studio cd song, a simple mp3 will suffice for most people's ears, but for this specific purpose, flac has a use, and a viable one.

id just burn my mp3s at 320kbps rather than standard 128kbps.
often i'll just burn at 192kbps cuz 320 is cumbersome.
i noticed the high end sounds [cymbals] sound all swishy at 128kbps.
really pissed me off when i'd work out and blast it, ya kno, so i go deaf, and itd be all f'd up sounding.

Not even worth burning if you go below 192kbps! At least, in my opinion. When I can, I try to stick with 320 myself. They sound so much better!
