Campaign for Real Beauty
I haven't seen the billboards, but I've seen the TV commercials.
I wasn't aware of the "campaign" at the time and I remember wondering why they would be using such unattractive models to push beauty products.

I'll agree that most runway models today, to me look like they just exited a concentration camp.
That being said, looking at the opening page to this website, I'm not foaming at the mouth either.

Maybe it's just a matter of me becoming more openminded in my old age, but I thought all of the women here were hot. Though it would have been nice to see more diversity in size, body shape, and age, for starters.
Supermodels are boring.

I haven't seen commercials, but I've seen this bus stop billboard all over the place around downtown (click on second woman in from left, Julie – her highlighted picture is in the ads):
Julie
I thought it was pretty cool, as they were pushing as firming lotion product and while the model isn't perfect, she did seem to have good, firm skin in an 'unretouched' kind of way.
Interesting idea, I really wonder how it will work for Dove. Seeing as their primary sales are to women in supermarkets and drug stores (rather than high end department stores or boutiques), it may have a lot of appeal for their demographic.

I feel sorry for Julie, I wonder how it has been for her going through life with no neck?

Advertising typically utilizes models that one would aspire to looking/acting/being like. Perhaps these models (who really look like circa 1985 models) are what women relate and more reasonably aspire to be. Nothing wrong with that. I'm sure there was much research behind the campaign.
I'm fully aware (as a 30 something male) that I'm not the target audience.

I saw the adverts all over the metro on 4th of july, and it certainly got my attention as a guy. I find all of them quite attractive.
This is not a campaign for real beauty. It's a campaing to sell soap. My guess is that it will.

for what it's worth, my sis-in-law writes grant proposals for the girl scouts and dove (in conjunction with this ad campaign) is giving $1.2mil in grants to fund programs that promote and foster healthy body images for young women. as a woman, i think it's a welcome change in advertising from the norm.
