Really Bad Lyrics

I take issue with this statement

Space wrote:And I'm very pleased with what Starship did with it, because they made it a universally appealing song".
Martin Page and Bernie Taupin also wrote Heart’s ‘These Dreams’ around the same time. I assume that was also intended to be a cool dark techno song.

You shut your mouth!!!!!
i love the song - it's one of my karaoke go-to's - but c'mon, that line is just cringe.
No way Jose. That line is deep! Ok I will discuss with my partner and revert back
She understands why some might find it cringe but she don’t cringe and she never has cringed when she heard it. She adds that if he committed the infidelity then it’s a perfect line.

So I stand by my statement. Please post a retraction or face disciplinary action.

Kinda like Kim Wilde's "Kids In American" New York to East California. If you exclude the western half of CA, 95% of the state's population is counted out.

HOWEVER, musically, the line needed a syllable before California, and "east" sounded better than "west". Extending "to" to "to-oo" would have sounded clumsy.

I'm okay with most weird lyrics when they work better musically than proper grammar would.

Cf. "Live And Let Die": But if this ever changin' world / In which we live in
my go to "cringe" lyric is from Durand Jones and the Indication from Morning in American

Congressmen in Washington
Receive their brief n' brew
While lead it fills the pipe lines
In a Detroit county school

I guess Wayne county doesn't have the same ring to it and I just realized this likely a reference to Flint which is in Genesee County

it's should be well established by now that South Detroit is actually Windsor, Ontario

yeah, but He took the midnight train goin' anywhere…so did he really care where he came from
‘I know a girl called Elsa, she’s into Alka Seltzer’.  Good bad!

‘Your friends will all go green for my lasagnnnnaaaaa’. Bad bad!

It’s a fine line

Maybe he wanted to namedrop Country Day but the school wouldn't give him the rights? Like how Stealing Harvard was originally supposed to be Stealing Stanford but Stanford declined to give them the rights.
^^ This is the one conspiracy theory I subscribe to.

i'm going to need to see some credentials if you're going to present mrs. hutch as an authority on cringe (other than the fact that she's involved with you  ;D ).

On this day in 1984, George Michael hit #1 on the U.K. singles chart with his debut solo single “Careless Whisper.” It sold over 6 million copies worldwide and topped charts in nearly 25 countries.

here in the US it was not technically his "debut solo single" - Careless Whisper was released by "Wham! featuring George Michael."  also, it was on "Make It Big" - a Wham!, not GM, album, .
