Doves / Mercury Rev rollcall

Why can't all those polite, non-pushy, happy, semi-sober and mostly non-smoking folks show up more often?
Where were you Badsushi? I felt like I was at a Marlboro convention! Was surrounded by puffers. Other committments meant I missed the Rev, arriving a few minutes into the Doves set, which was ok. Crowd seemed into it, band seemed grateful but it still lacked a certain something. A fine concert but nothing particularly memorable about it (except for the mini-romance played out by the couple in front of me!).

Oh, and are the shows getting louder or am I getting older? I had to buy earplugs for both the GO4 and the show last night…
i have found that many of the britrock bands playing at the club these days are overly loud, me thinks they are trying to coverup something. at the phoenix/DDIHC/Long-view show the volume level went down as the evening went along.

Probably a little of both. I'm finding more and more shows to be unbearably loud these days. I'll admit that part of it is that I'm becoming a cranky old man, but the volume is definitely on the rise.

I found the Gang of Four show to be at a tolerable level though. But Radio4's volume sent me running to the Backbar after about 30 seconds. I could actually hear them fairly well downstairs.

yeah, thats when I bought em and just kept em in for the night
Underwhelmed by this performance. I thought the majority of the songs were very bland and really required very little from the drummer and guitarist.

I got into half the songs I would say but the other half was so boring I was spacing out. I was holding on to the last hope that they would bring the house down with "There Goes The Fear" but alas it was not to be.

Not a bad concert, just didnt live up to the last few shows Ive seen nor the high expectations I had for this show.
so does Radio 4 have pictures of people in compromising positions or something, because they are certainly boring as hell. i spent most of thier performance sitting on a couch watching them on a live video feed in nyc. the only decent song of thier was the last one "dance to the underground"
Overall a great show, with two very different styles of showmanship displayed on the stage. First, Mercury Rev which I can only take in small doses, impressed me with how rocking they played several of their songs, even with the excessive keyboard noodling…But the lead singer Donahue, I felt like I was at a promise keepers rally on acid with the horrific visuals behind the band flashing quotes from all over the map, my fave being "Do the best that you can" with a white bird slowly flapping, flapping…
Doves put on a great show I thought, very tight playing and some solid songs, though I was reminded of how repetitive some of their compositions are..but overall very worth $25.
Brennser: I was up front left; lots of baseball caps, but really very polite guys…NOT smoking. With regard to the noise: I was very near the famous 930 speakers, but didn't need earplugs for Mercury Rev. The Doves drove me to the back - not far from merch. table with a bunch of local r&r celebrities…few smokers back there too. What was with the guys back by sound booth smoking THE BIGGEST HONKING CIGARS I've ever seen? Maybe they accounted for the Marlboro country ambiance… Off subj: A Post reviewer was standing next to me writing like crazy during MR's set…curious to see his review.

I was right by the merch table - who were the local r&r celebs?
Pretty good show. Not as good as the last time I saw them. Jimi's voice didn't quite sound 100%

i think she's talking about the lead singer of Noisy Zen and the bassist for Los Pimpos … they both scored gigs at the Grog and Tankard this weekend!!

It's like Iggy Pop slipping on a puddle of Bjork's afterbirth and landing headfirst in the lobotomy kit hidden in the orchestra pit then coming out of his coma 9 months later singing Marvin Gaye tunes.

Ive heard phenomenal things about the Doves live show.

On the windswept peaks of Mount Rockolympus, Bono ejaculates his Goldschlaggeresque diety sauce into an amethyst goblet fashioned by Roky Erickson. Winged nymphs in the guise of a healthy-teated Kylie Minogue spirit the magic opalescent elixir to earth in a soft cozy fashioned from Layne Staley's death flannel and impregnate Suzi Quatro during a fevered dream about a chaotic world ruled by the MC5. In a dank, dingy Seattle manger nine months later, a child is born, surrounded by three wizened rock wisemen named Clapton, Townsend, and Page.
Do you use some sort of Mixed Metaphor Generator?

Or do you actually think these things up on your own?

local rock and roll celebrities? Uncle Syrup? get a grip dude, they suck.

Los Pimpos, Noisy Zen, and Malfunction of the Head are where its at.
Mercury Rev blew away the Doves…I can't believe it…the Doves were rather boring and seemed like they were just making up the nite as it went along…I love both of these bands…I have seen the Doves everytime they have been to 930…and this was as if it was their first time outside of the playing a school dance…wonder what was up?
