wow, i feel like a 40-yr-old government secretary, i had no idea any of these were coming out this week:
gorillaz - demon days
stephen malkmus - face the truth
sleater-kinney - the woods
belle & sebastian - push barman to open old wounds
shout out louds - howl howl gaff gaff
anyone heard any of them? in particular, the belle & sebastian?

is this not the laziest thing you've ever read from a journalist?
from the allmusic review of shout out loud's album "In fact a better combination of arrangement, emotion and melody is hard to find anywhere in the early 2000's so far. Saturday Looks Good to Me, for sure. The Concretes, perhaps. Maybe there are others, whatever, the real point is that Howl Howl Gaff Gaff is an excellent album."
that said, i really liked the shout out louds when they opened for someone recently at the club (the futureheads?) … hope the album is as good as the sloppy review …

I was pleasantly suprised to find a used copy of the new Gorillaz at my local cd/vinyl store on sunday. It's pretty good. Looking forward to hearing the new Sleater Kinney and the Belle and Sebastian collection. The SM cd is also supposed to be pretty neat.

and naturally, B&S have a goofy new flash game on their website to go along with today's release.

The Sleater Kinney album is getting rave reviews from just about every music publication. For what it's worth Rolling Stone just gave it 4 stars. The album is supposedly classic rock sounding nuanced with SK style punk. Can't wait for this one!

A friend of mine told me this morning that SK's new album sounds like Black Sabbath. I was surprised. I've been listening to a lot of Black Sabbath recently (Master of Reality/Paranoid).
It seems like every band I like, they list as influences (Television, Go Betweens). So I can't figure out why I don't like SK.

you should definitely give this one a try - different to anything they've ever done and the Sabbath comparisons are spot on

I will say, as a very big SK fan, that their last coupla albums have been wonderfully critically received, and they're good, but didn't blow me away. I feel like I don't need another SK album, the five I got are sufficient…That sad, I'm very irresponsible with my moolah and will probably buy it (I still love and support them…)
Does anyone else know what I mean, how sometimes you just have enough of a band's albums at, say, two, three or four (depending on the band)?

I disagree, I thought One Beat was among the best they've ever done

The new Malkmus is excellent…I highly recommend it.
I'm going to have to pick up the B&S, too…

I had huge expectations for Face the Truth, and I'm more than satisfied. He ran through a lot of the new tunes at SXSW and they sounded like winners then.
I thought SM's eponymous release was solid, but a little sterile in parts. Pig Lib was a huge step up, bringing the back some of the weirdness.
I think Face the Truth is the most "Pavement-like" of his solo stuff. It's kind of a cross between Wowee Zowee and Terror Twilight.
I can't wait for the 6/4 show at the Black Cat.
