MTV (a bit of a rant)

Does anyone remember MTV back when they actually played music videos? Now it's all reality shows and sketch comedy that's supposed to be edgy, but just comes across dull. Any what about when MTV used to be a good source for discovering new music, not just the same recycled top 40 stuff you see on TRL. Maybe I'm just too old, but I do recall watching programs like 120 Minutes or Headbangers Ball and thinking "I've got to check out that band". Now I watch MTV and think to myself "No wonder I don't listen to music radio". I don't care who Hillary Duff is dating or what two rappers have beef with one another or what hot couple hooked up on Road Rules.

I'd just like to put on MTV in the background and listen to music or watch the video if something catches my attention. I went to their website and they don't even have a link to request a specific video… LAME.

So anyway my frustration has led me here, to vent and perhaps find a sympathetic audience. Of course I could have been mislead.

In the meantime check out this very cool music video:

"Electric Worry" - Clutch
Wait, who is Hilary Duff dating?
MTV…..I didn't know that was still on.

Watch MTV I guess and all will be revealed.
subterranean on MTV2 is still pretty cool, like 120 minutes minus 60 minutes … sunday night at 12am

I guess I am getting old because the thought of sitting up till 1am on a Sunday in order to watch some cool vids just doesn't appeal to me.

Hmmm, maybe I could DVR it?
there was a good article in wired magazine a couple of months ago about how MTV has gotten passed by so much new technology and how they're fighting back … basically their grand new idea is a sort of MMORPG / virtual reality world where people walk around with avatars and talk to each other … seems really innovative …

that's what i do, i have 10 episodes sitting on my DVR right now, i put it on when i'm working in the living room … good mix of well-known indie (bands that would play at 930 club) and more cutting edge stuff
This is why I always call that crap station Anything But Music TV.

Any time anything good starts, the corprates have to get ahold of it and squeeze everything good out of it and commercialize it beyond death. I just don't get why anyone at all bothers with it anymore. Well, except maybe Smackie … but we all know he has a completely different interest.
I watch the Hills on MTV and that's it.

Now if they go HD and kick it off with the LC Sex Video, then maybe I'll watch it again, but otherwsie, it ceased existing as a Music TV channel for me about 10 years ago, maybe more.

I don't even watch TRL any longer since they stopped showing videos in their entirety.

Seriously, what the hell is that all about? "Alright people here it is the #1 most requested video on all of MTV, over 300,000 people have requested it and we're going to show you 30 seconds of it in the top right corner of your screen while we show dedications from our studio audience in the lower part of your screen".
When the internet has millions of mucis videos to watch, who erally needs MTV. Serisouly, don't complain. They stopped playing music videos years ago, you just caught on i guess.
I don't even mind something like MTV. If you like music, there are a million other places you can go. Years ago they might have been responsible for suppressing decent music or promoting crap, or whatever, because they were more of a power player. Nowadays they can pretty much do whatever they want and it doesn't matter because there are a zillion alternatives. I have no idea where to find them on TV and wouldn't know if they playing good music these days or not. And I don't even care unless someone tells me Beavis and Butthead are coming back.

Not just new bands either, I loved Closet Classics. First time I heard Blue Cheer was on that show. Summertime Blues–fierce!
i like to pretend mtv doesn't exist anymore.
i don't even actually know the channel number at this point. when going through the listings, 99% of the time i find that neither mtv, mtv2, vh1 or vh1classic are actually playing music… so what's the point anyway?

i honestly just try not to watch tv really at all anymore.
But good ol' boy Country Music TV (or whatever it's called) always has some kind of music video or concert airing. Shame that I don't like commercial Country music. Guess their fans know how to keep the corporate side in check.

Honestly, I watch very, very little tv myself.
humorously: this man doesn't even own a telelvision. really. seriously: i don't own a television either, so maybe i am the man in that story :)

TV SUCKS!!! boo hiss.
Yeah, eMpTyVee, as a friend used to call it, hasn't shown music videos since the 1980s. This is not news.

MTV International is better… that's how I discovered OK Go and Sophie Ellis-Bextor…
With the joy that is digital cable, I just go to the 400+ channels that play nothing but music and leave it on. Found some good stuff that way. MTV 2 started off as "all music, all the time" but that turned into the second run channel of all the stuff that was MTV and is now repeating. I do like Headbangers Ball and Subterranean but I rarely get a chance to sit and watch.

Sadly, I find VH-1 Classic (cringe) to be a better station especially their "alternative" show where old 120 Minute videos are shown.
